WEDDING BANQUET
6 o'clock in the evening at AAA Seafood Restaurant in Monterey Park, CA

Background
Chinese wedding banquets are known for their extravagance and splendor.  In modern Chinese society, the banquet is considered to be the most important part of the wedding day.

Traditionally, the groom will pay for everything but nowadays, many couples will pay themselves.  To the parents, the wedding feast is a chance for them to show off for family and friends by throwing a generous party as well as announce the marriage of their children. If the wedding feast turns out well, then the parents will have great 'face'. In the Chinese culture, it's very important to have 'face' [respect of others].

  • There is usually an emcee to "host" the evening and alert the guests to important announcements.
Our emcee will be the Bride's sister, Sanya Namboun.
  • Since the wedding banquet holds such esteem in Chinese culture, the menu is usually made up of Chinese delicacies - the best that money can buy. Our banquet will be no different. The menu will consist of the following:

  • Alcoholic drinks, uncommon in Chinese culture, are considered compulsory at a wedding banquet, and the wedding couple often drink a toast at each table of the banquet. The traditional liquor of choice is cognac, V.S.O.P.
We will be serving Landy V.S.O.P, one bottle at each table.
  • Between courses, the emcee entertains the guests while the wedding party takes turns playing tricks on the couple (mostly on the groom).
    • Like when the groom picked up the bride from her home that morning, the bridesmaids play funny games on the groom to make him show his love for the bride. These games are similar in respect to the clinking of glasses in the Western culture. The goal is to make the groom show his love in public.
  • Also, between courses, the bride will leave to change into the traditional cheongsham/ qipao dress.
  • The opposite of Western tradition's receiving line, at the end of the banquet the bride and groom stand at the door, and speak to everyone as they leave.
  • Rather than gifts, guests usually give money tucked in red envelopes.
