Interest Groups

Interest groups form a very important part of our club, allowing us to interact with a smaller group of members who share a common focus. They reflect the diverse interests of our members and range from art to gourmet cooking to advocacy.

Most groups meet once a month, in members' homes.

This list shows only those groups that had room for new members in 2008. We have several other groups (book, art, and food groups) that were full last year. New groups can be started if there is sufficient interest.

Antiques

Antiques is a long standing group, meeting monthly in members’ homes. This year’s program features a variety of topics primarily focused on Toronto.  (Second Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm)

Art Appreciation

If you are thinking of visiting Russia, this would be a great year to sample our group’s new topic, Art of Russia. No previous knowledge required, just interest. Topics will include castles, weird tsars, fantastic treasures and amazing paintings.  (Third Monday of most months at 7:30pm.)

Arts Around Toronto

Visiting various places of cultural interest followed by a sociable lunch in a nearby restaurant is the focus for this group. A new member fee of $2.00 will be collected. (Fourth Wednesday of the month at 11:00am.)

Baby Boomers Plus

Social outings with no pre-work/studying are planned and members may choose events, e.g., galleries, restaurants, theatre, potlucks, based on individual schedules. (Dates vary with events.) Come to help plan and meet the group at the Sept. meeting.

Book Trade

This group does not meet. Recommended books (half fiction, non-fiction) are chosen and members each pay for one book. Every three weeks the books are passed on. Everyone gets to read 10-12 books and keeps the last one.

Bridge Groups

·         BasicBridge  (2nd and 4th Thursday at 1:00 pm) We welcome players who feel they need practice and updating of their game. Skills range from limited to more experienced. We have an advisor to explain the newer conventions.

·         Bridge, Afternoon, Duplicate II  (First Tuesday of the month at 12:30pm)   A no-pressure brand of Bridge

·         Bridge, Alpha (2nd and 4th Tuesday at 1:00pm)

·         Bridge 96 (4th Monday at 1:00pm)

·         Bridge, Original Spin-Offs (4th Thursday at 12:30pm)

·         Bridge, “Happy Eights”    (2nd Wednesday at 12:30pm)

·         Bridge, Evening, Duplicate II   (1st Wednesday at 7:30pm)

·         Bridge, Third Thursday, Duplicate   (3rd Thurs at 7:15pm)

French/Français

The French group is for members who enjoy speaking French and wish to practice it. Activities are conversation and discussion on varied subjects and visits to restaurants, movies, plays, lectures and other cultural events. (Second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.)

Fun and Games

Relaxing, non-competitive fun is the theme. We play card games, board games, word games, etc. – everything but bridge. No previous knowledge is necessary. We learn as we go. (First Friday of the month at 7:30pm.)

Global Concerns

The Global Concerns group this year will take a look at the Arctic regions. Topics to be examined include the politics of the polar regions, Arctic societies and health problems, effects of climate change and other present day concerns.  Members present brief papers followed by group discussion.  (First Monday of the month at 1:00 pm.)

Keeping Us In Stitches

This group’s focus is fabric – quilting, knitting, embroidery – stitchery of all kinds. Together we plan to visit craft fairs, exhibitions, galleries, artists, and shops, followed, naturally, by lunch. (Dates, times, vary depending on events.)

Life Skills

The Life Skills group is about exploring ideas and experiences that allow us to lead richer lives. We share personal stories, investigate “happenings” about the city and discuss topics of interest. (First and third Thursday at 1:00pm.)

Play Reading

Members take turns selecting a play to read at each meeting. Parts are assigned and after the reading, we briefly discuss the play and our reactions to it. (First Thursday of the month at 7:00pm.)

Resources and Environment

We research and discuss information about the limits and threats to our natural systems and possible solutions to the problems. (Second Monday of the month at 1:00pm.)

Status of Women & Human Rights

We study and advocate for the equality of women and girls (social, political and economic), and the human rights of all Canadians (and immigrants). Our fall meetings will focus on Employment Insurance.  (First Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm.)

Table Hoppers

Members take turns in planning each month’s visit to a designated restaurant. We go all over the city. Lots of fun and conversation. Separate cheques. (Third Tuesday of the month at 12:00 pm.)

Walk and Talk

We are a friendly group which walks (vigorously or leisurely) in the ravines and parks of Toronto. We carpool if possible, and winter walks occur on cleared paths. Join us in appreciating nature’s gifts and for congenial conversation. (First and third Thursday of the month at 10:00 a.m.)

Other Interest Groups within the club continue to flourish. There are three book discussion groups, two food groups and one art group.  At present, these groups are full. If you wish to help start a new group (similar or different), please call our Interest Group Convenor, Katharine Klose.
