The USS Midway (CV41)

The continuing saga of America's flagship.

The significance of the USS Midway to me started in 1992 when I boarded the ship for her decommissioning ceremony at NAS North Island. It was the first time I was ever on an aircraft carrier and was only nine years old. In early 2000 I started volunteering with the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, whose mission was to bring the Midway back to San Diego to be a tribute to both the ship and local naval heritage. In 2001, the California Coastal Commission approved the plan. In 2003, the ship was donated to the museum by the Navy. With some final preparations, the Midway would finally come home.

The Midway left the naval graveyard at Bremerton, Washington, on October 3, 2003, and arrived October 7 in Oakland for repainting. She left Oakland December 31 and arrived at NAS North Island on January 5, 2004. She took on some restored aircraft and was prepared to set sail one last time. Her final voyage was made on January 10 when she was moved across the bay to her permanent home in San Diego at the Navy Pier. It was the culmination of years of effort - it took 12 years to get the ship to San Diego. Yet, the journey is not over. A museum has been created, but it is still evolving and growing. Herein will contain a visual history of Midway Magic in the making. This web site is dedicated to the USS Midway, the museum, and all those who served aboard this great ship.

Thanks for stopping by. Enjoy!
