The year is 2377. Nearly three years have passed since the combined might of the Federation Alliance defeated the Dominion Axis. Since then, the Dominion has retreated back into the unknown region of the Gamma Quadrant. The Breen have vanished back into their territory. And the Cardassians are working hard to rebuild what was once a Glorious and Grand empire. And yet, though it seems that peace should reign in the aftermath of this destructive conflict, such is not to be the fate of the galaxy.
With no evil force to threaten the galaxy and bind them as allies, the Federation Alliance is weakening. Old rivalries between the Romulan Star Empire and the Klingon Empire have resurfaced, and skirmishes are increasing in frequency and in bloodshed. The Breen Confederacy has made sporadic strikes into Federation space, disrupting shipping and supply lines to distant outposts. And opportunistic pirates have made frequent raids in and around devastated Cardassia Prime. In the face of all this strife, the United Federation of Planets must attempt to hold onto the peace that was won. This is easier said than done. Tempers are hot all over the galaxy, and Starfleet is still rebuilding from its losses to the Dominion.
The Starship Horizan is one of several Starfleet vessels assigned to enforce peace in the galaxy and to explore many regions of space yet to be discovered. Their base of operations is First Fleet Star base 878, an immense space station in orbit around an M class planet in the Sol system.
