Poems of the USS Hambleton

As written by William Thomas Hambleton

THE HAMBLETON
The Hambleton,long may you ride
The troubled deep in strength and pride,
May tyrants cringe and stand aghast,
Before your mighty killing blast,
Till all the earth o're land and sea,
From foul oppressions hand is free.

The starry flag flung to the air
'Tis yours the battle front to dare,
Strike to the heart the beast and tool,
Who wish this sunny land to rule,
Until the breadth of every sea,
To all mankind, is free, is free.

NAMED AFTER US

Some names are famous for this or for that
One man named Casey was great at the bat.
Some are on monuments, carved in the stone.
Others like Washington, stand out alone.
Some famed for riches, amassed through the years,
Some names are noted for leading the cheers.
Some have their names on a sleeper or bus,
But we have a battleship named after us.

Many there are in the pages you'll find,
Just because once at the White House they dined.
Some famed for playing a part on the stage,
Some became known by the call of a page.
Some have good reason to boast and to brag,
Others when heard, make you wish for a gag,
But the name Hambleton - that's ultra plus,
We have a battleship named after us.

These poems were written and sent to Forrest Close, Lt. Commander ,U.S. Navy Commanding DD455 by William Hambleton. William Hambleton's niece, Ms. Joyce Hambleton Whitten, believes that her family may be related to the ships namesake Samuel Hambleton. The destroyer Hambleton was very close to her families heart and they were very proud of her.
