Sergeant First Class William DeSoto, Infantry, United States Army,
a member of Company B, 32d Infantry, distinguished himself by meritorious
achievement during the period 23 March 1953 to 26 March 1953. During this
period, Assistant (Incorrect) Sergeant DE SOTO performed his duties as
Platoon Sergeant in an exemplary manner. Sergeant DE SOTO, through his
expert leadership, sound military background, tactical and technical knowledge,
developed his platoon into a superior fighting unit. During the period
in which his platoon was committed to the offensive action, Sergeant DE
SOTO was a model of military efficiency and courageous leadership. Sergeant
DE SOTO moved among his men continually encouraging them while directing
accurate and intense fire on the enemy. The meritorious achievement of
Sergeant DE SOTO reflects great credit on himself and the military service.

“This commendation not correct. I was a M/SGT and Platoon SGT. Also
acting Platoon Leader.” (Due to an artillery shell that made a direct hit
on the Command Post bunker as dad was talking with old friend Sgt Bennie
Droll 75 yard or so on way to meeting with his new commanding officer and
platoon leader. He told me the shell killed all the officer meeting on
the outside of the bunker as it was too small inside. The one officer inside
was wounded.)

1. The recent membership drive for the Airborne Association was very
successful. It gives me
great pleasure to announce that the Castro Payne Chapter of the 77th
Special Forces Group
is the second largest chapter in the Association. This is due in large
part to the untiring efforts
on the part of a few individuals. The total membership of the Castro
Payne Chapter now stands
at 781.
2. I wish to take this opportunity to extend to you my most hearty
congratulations and sincere appreciation for a job well done. Your personal
contribution to this successful membership
drive has not gone unnoticed.
3. Recruiting new members for our chapter will be a continuing requirement.
As our present assigned personnel are transferred to new assignments we
will have a flow of new personnel. Many of these new replacements will
be recent graduates into the ranks of the paratroopers and in some instances
those who have not had a previous opportunity to become associated with
the Airborne Association.

Your performance of duty has been outstanding. Because of your loyalty,

Mohawk Arrow your leadership, sound judgment and professional knowledge

Reason:
For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile
force:
Sergeant Major DeSoto distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous
action on 25 October 1965, while serving as advisor to a two company
task force sent to reinforce the US Special Forces camp at Plei Me, Republic
of Vietnam. The camp had been under attack by approximately two regiments
of Viet Cong for thirty-six hours. At 1100 hours, a reinforced squad
departed the camp to neutralize a Viet Cong machine gun position which
had been placing accurate and intensive fire from a distance of 50 meters
outside the defensive wire. As two US advisors and an assaulting squad
armed with flame throwers, came within 25 meters of the machine gun position,
they received intense machine gun fire. When they crawled within
15 meters of the Viet Cong position and rose to fire their flame throwers,
both weapons malfunctioned and were abandoned. Sergeant Major DeSoto
moved out from the camp in an attempt to get the flame throwers to function.
Realizing that the weapons were completely inoperable, he joined the squad
in neutralizing the Viet Cong position. Although he was critically
wounded in the arm while assaulting the position, the machine gun position
and three sniper positions were neutralized in the engagement. The
heroic actions of Sergeant Major DeSoto were in keeping with the highest
traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself,
his unit, and the United States Army.

Served as principal assistant and advisor to the Commander. Coordinated
all matters pertaining to the efficient functioning of the RVN irregulars
and US personnel assigned to the Detachment. Responsible to the Commander
for the supervision and training of selected Long Range Reconnaissance
Teams. Kept Commander informed on the status, strength, morale, general
training and logistical requirements of indigenous and US personnel.
Was also responsible for coordinating the operation of the mess hall and
hospital of the irregular troops. Established and maintained
the indigenous personnel records.

Served as the senior principal noncommissioned officer of a special
Forces “C” Detachment Headquarters, and supervised the three subordinate
“B” Detachment Unit Sergeant Majors in matters pertinent to the enlisted
element of the command. Was responsible for the overall administrative
workload of the unit, and advised the Commander on assignment, reassignments,
transfers, promotions, granting of passes and leaves, punishments, and
awards for the enlisted personnel. Coordinated and directed the Headquarters
operations, forming the unit for drill, ceremonies, and other military
formations. Took notes of observed discrepancies and initiated appropriate
corrective actions.
