Mythology

This is my mythology section. Below you will find the names of various people that relate to the Sailor Scouts. I belive that the names used in the show come from the ancient myths about them, because the people in the myths all had something to do with the moon, the various planets, or the element from that planet.**Keep in mind that I am talking about the mythological people, not the ones from the show.**

Artemis

Artemis is the sister of Apollo (God of the sun.) Artemis was goddess of the new moon, and of the hunt. (Artemis is sometimes refered to as Diana.) Artemis wanted to be free, and to never marry, but live with her followers in the woods. She had nymph followers, who vowed also to remain unmarried. It is said that Artemis led the nymphs through the woods, walking in front of of them. She had a shining crescent moon on her forehead, to show she was leader.

Endymion (Darien)

Endymion was a shepherd loved by Selene (goddess of the crescent moon.) She would visit him every night while he slept, and would kiss his eyelids. Selene loved Endymion so much that she made him sleep eternally, just so she could be near him always.

Harookoo

Harookoo was a poor fisherman who found the moon goddess' coat (in Japanese mythology.) He didn't know what it was, but he decided to keep it. The moon goddess came to seek it, and she promised to dance for Harookoo in exchange for the coat, but he thought she would take the coat and fly off. The moon goddess became angry, and told him that it was well and good for humans to break their promises, but goddesses didn't. Harookoo apologised, and gave her the coat. The moon goddess danced, and then flew up to the moon.
*** I belive that Harookoo is the source of Sailor Uranus' Japanese name.***

Jupiter

Jupiter (Zeus) was the god of weather and the sky. After Jupiter grew up, he defeated the Titans with the assistance of his brothers Pluto and Neptune. Jupiter is well known for his infidelity because not only having his wife Juno(Hera), he also had many affairs. To attract goddesses and nymphs he would often assume different forms, or find some way of shielding what he was doing from jealous Hera. Once, he turned a nymph into a cow to keep Hera from finding out what he was doing.

Mars

Mars was the god of war in Roman mythology.

Mercury

Mercury was the god of science, and the gods' messenger in Roman mythology.

Moon Godess, Moon Maiden, ect.

There are many references to moon goddesses and moon maidens in mythology. In Greek mythology, it is said that when the moon was out, the moon goddess was driving her chariot. There is a Japanese myth that says a fisherman named Harookoo found the moon goddess' coat.

Neptune

Neptune (Posiedon) was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto. Neptune is the god of water and earhtquakes. Neptune had a contest with a goddess (Athene) to see who a Grecian city would be named after.

Pluto

Pluto (Hades) was god of the underworld, and the brother of Neptune and Jupiter. He took Persephone as his wife, and held her captive in the underworld.

Rabbits

Rabbits are a significant part of mythology, and Sailor Moon. There are many references to rabbits in mythology. The Japanese believed that a rabbit lived in the moon, and pounded mochi (roughly translated, it means cheeseballs.) There is a Japansese myth that says the rabbit lived in the moon and ground up herbs for the people of Earth to use for medicines. Serena's Japanese name means "Rabbit Of The Moon."
***Also, notice how rabbit heads appear on Serena's blanket, socks, and in various other spots in the cartoon.***

Selene (Serena)

Selene was also considered goddess of the moon. Her mother was Selenity.* She loved Endymion, and put him into eternal sleep.

Venus

Venus (Aphrodite) was the godess of love and beauty. She was born in the seafoam, and the sea nymphs took her to live with them in their undersea home. They decided, one day, that she should see the world above the water, so they saw to it that she got to Mount Olympus. There, Venus married Jupiter's son.

*In Japanese, they don't pronounce their r's and l's the way they sound in English. R and l sound like the same letter.
