COMPANY PROFILE ++ Updates ++ Updates ++ Updates ++

The U.P. Repertory Company is a non-stock, non-profit organization composed of the students of the University of the Philippines, which aims to promote and uplift the state of the Philippine Theater. Founded in 1968 through the leadership of U.P. professor Behn Cervantes, the Company was a venue for the production of classical plays. The founders also encouraged and trained students who exhibited an inclination to the theater arts. Unfortunately, due to lack of support from the U.P. administration and financial difficulties, the programs and plans of the Company were put to an abrupt end. It was only in 1972 when the company was re-established to answer the University's need for a responsible performing group. Due to deteriorating social conditions prevalent during those days, the Company decided to produce plays relevant to the Philippine context.

The UPRC has a long tradition of producing plays that mirror the lives of the Filipinos. This tradition stems from its guiding principle, " Repleksyon ng Pangangailangan ng Nakararami " or RPN. The Company has produced thc plays of national writers such as Amelia Lapenia-Bonifacio, Rogelio Sicat, Alberto Florentino, Domingo Landicho, Amado Hernandez, Bonifacio Ilagan, Estrella Alfon, Wilfredo Virtusio, Julian Cruz Balmaseda, Nick Joaquin, Wilfredo Ma. Guerrero, Rene Villanueva, Luna Sicat Cleto and Joi Barrios.

Many known actors, such as Barbara Perez, Roberto Arevalo, Hilda Coronel, Gloria Diaz, Orestes Ojeda, Tetchie Agbayani, Pilar Pilapil, Daria Ramirez, Roderick Paulate, Daniel Fernando, Tony Mabesa, Anton Juan, Alexander Cortez, Ogie Juliano, Leo Roque, Susan Valdez, Angie Ferro, and Juan Rodrigo have been a part of several Company productions.

In addition the Company has developed a significnt variant of the lightning/street play called the "Tula-Dula". The " Tula-Dula", developed by Cecile de Joya, is a lightning play where actors act out a mime to a poem being read aloud by readers. The "Tula-Dula" has been used by the Company in various venues, and is still used to this day.

Being a student organization, the Company has continually striven to train its members, such as costume making, set-construction, lighting design, as well as acting, directing and writing. These activities are conducted by inviting veterans of the theater world as teachers and workshop facilitators.
Consequently, the company has produced talents, some of whom are quite successful in their chosen field. Rory Quintos, Ces Quesada, Jon Santos, Ching Arellano, Kata Inocencio, Blaise Gacoscos, Joi Barrios, Hill Billy Willy of of WKC, Eugenio Domingo, Stella Canete, Menggie Cobarrubias, Augie Rivera and Chris Martinez are just some of them.

In pursuing its aims of bringing theater to the masses, the Company has performed in a number of venues such as schools, universities, towns and small communities outside the University: Metro Manila, Bulacan, Laguna, Cagayan, Ilocos Sur, and Negros Occidental. Whether performing in a big venue or a small plaza, the Company has continually striven to ingrain in its audience the importance of theater.

It is for these aims and acts that over the years, the UPRC has been given recognition. The Company was named Most Outstanding Special Interest Group in 1983 and Most Outstanding Student Organization in 1985 by U.P. It was cited by the Aliw Awards for Best Cultural Series in 1987.

We are now on our 31st season.
