A bit of history ...

Located at the base of the legendary Mt. Makiling and 45 km. south of Manila,  the original UP Los Banos campus was established March 6, 1909.  The UP College of Agriculture was one of the first units of the university.  The first twelve students and four teachers of the college held their classes on June 14, 1909.  The Department of Forestry was established on April 19, 1910 and was later elevated into a full college in 1949.  The first batch of undergraduate students received their degree during the graduation rites in 1911 and MS and PhD degrees were first conferred in 1913 and 1963, respectively.

On November 20, 1972, the College of Sciences and Humanities was established by Presidential Decree No. 58 creating the UP System and granting autonomy to UP Los Banos.  With the establishment of the college, UPLB assumed the task of transforming itself to a comprehensive university offering quality education in the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.

The UPLB Graduate School was created as a unit distinct from the College of Agriculture  on December 21, 1972.

UPLB became a campus with seven colleges in 1983 when several institutes became fullfledged

colleges and the College of Veterinary Medicine was transferred to UP Los Banos from UP Diliman.

The other colleges at UP Los Banos are: The College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, College of Human Ecology and College of Economics and Management.

There are 1000 members of the faculty and 50% of them are holders of doctorate degrees.  Enrollment is about 10,000.  There are about 400 foreign students representing 25 countries.  The College of Agriculture is one of the top agricultural colleges in Asia.

The UP Los Banos campus is famous for its UPLB spirit among its students and alumni.  The Los Banos spirit started during the First World War, when in response to a call for volunteers tofight in Europe, UPLB faculty, employees and students volunteered in mass for possible deployment in war.  Since then the event has been celebrated on October 10 every year.  It is the same spirit that is being celebrated by UPLBAAA today and every year.

UPLBAAA Foundation Updates

The money collected from "Lifetime" members have funded the foundation fund.  Lifetime membership was granted to members who willingly made commitment of support and paid $100 each.  The current lifetime membership fee of $100 was peg to be a promotional rate, and will increase in the future.  The organization decided that all lifetime membership fee will be directly added to the Foundation Fund to commemorate the long term commitments of these members.  In addition to these monies, a pledge of at least $1000, to help seed this fund was made as the initial donation of Frank Mamaril (founding president of UPLBAAA) and Rory Pizana Mamaril.  The foundation has now been structured with its own separate Constitution and by-laws.  Conceptually, the UPLBAAA Foundation will be invested in aggressive long term  investment instruments to maximize growth.  Once the fund grows to a targeted goal, funds will be disbursed (grants) for various needs, according to the organization's objectives.  It is planned that only part of the mutual earnings will be disbursed.  This will allow the foundation fund to grow "perpetually".  Conceivably as the fund grows in the future, the grants (disbursements) will also grow in proportion to the size of the fund.  Currently, the general membership feels that the foundation fund will not limit its grants to scholarships as initially intended., but will fund various reasonable needs such as funds to help UPLB acquire equipment, books & computers, and grant funds to aid in maintenance of capital facilities.  All these future grants will depend on how successful this Foundation fund will accumulate and grow.

An Invitation to All UPLB Graduates

        Greetings to all !!!

We are delighted to announce that we have organized the University of the Philippines Los Banos Alumni Association of America (UPLBAAA) on October 5, 1996 at Coyote Park, San Francisco.  UPLBAAA is only three years old now, but we are greatly optimistic that the association will continue to grow throughout the next millenium and beyond.  UPLBAAA has a vast potential to be one of the most active and productive UP alumni associations of the world.  Our officers and members are highly talented and possess a strong positive mental attitude (PMA), and above all are very willing to help out our Alma Mater in accomplishing its missions as an outstanding academic institution.

Fellow UPLB graduates,  our Alma Mater greatly helped us all before, so now let us look back and say UPLB, thank you for all your help. How can we help you in return?  In line with the famous statement of the late President Kennedy, "Ask not what UPLB can do for you, but what you can do for UPLB."

UPLBAAA's mission is to be of help to our members and UPLB.  Fellow UPLB graduates, join our crusade and help us in any way we can.

UPLBAAA has great plans for our members, friends and UPLB.  Please help us translate our plans into fulfillment, our words into actions or deeds, and into concrete results.

We need your help.  Please join UPLBAAA.  It will be the greatest and most lasting decision of your life.

Thank you for your positive response.  Let us keep the U.P. Los Banos spirit be ever burning.  MABUHAY UPLBAAA !!!
