"The Scout"

January 17, 2005

As told by Kronos

As the afternoon sun poured it’s warmth through the trees, Kronos finished skinning the drake. "Nasty, useless little beast you are in life, but at least your hides will be useful in death." As he took a deep breath to savor life’s sweet taste, Kronos began searching the hill top for any of the drake’s large cousins. Cursing his luck at not finding any dragons, he began to make ready for travel. It was at that moment that his hair stood on end and he froze. His faithful swampy, Liz, was staring to the east, alert to an approaching danger. Kronos immediately called upon divine powers and readied himself for battle. The noise from the bush drew closer; he tensed and said one last prayer. Then, out stumbled a warrior, a human. He was slumped over his mount and obviously wounded. With a mix of relief and frustration, Kronos relaxed. "Probably another new adventurer that engaged an evil beyond him, trying to make a name before his time or skill allowed. Well Liz, lets help the poor lad out". With swift movement he closed on the near lifeless being to render aid.

Once he steadied the mount, he removed the rider. "By the power of truth, what got hold of you!" he thought as he surveyed the damage. The swampy’s barding was shredded and useless, and the noble warrior’s armor was dented and cracked with blood flowing from the openings. "Strange, this armor is well beyond a lad new to these lands; I can see magical etchings of enchantment and the workmanship, although damaged by battle, is legendary in quality. And that sword….." The hair rose on Kronos’ neck a second time, he recognized the sword. Gently but swiftly he began removing the helm and tunic to render aid. To his horror, his fear was confirmed. "Tek! By all that is good, be strong and hold on to the energy of life." And so the battle began, not for glory or gold but to save a friend’s life. Enchantments and bandages were applied through the night, the only breaks being to fight back foul creatures seeking to finish death’s work. More prayers were sent to the heavens, and Kronos waited.

As the sun rose, hope and prayer was rewarded as Tek stirred and began to mumble. Kronos began speaking and orienting Tek, as he seemed dreadfully afraid and combative. Eventually, Tek was no longer fighting the demons plaguing his mind and realized he was safe and out of harm’s way. "Tek, if you are able, tell me what did this to you and we will extract revenge", Kronos said as anger and dread flowed through him. "Friend, I would be no friend to you if I sent you on a fool’s mission. However, I fear that I would be no friend if I did not warn you either. So please, take what I am about to say as the utmost of truth. About two weeks ago, I was slaughtering foul orcs. As I stood over a dying mage, he grinned at me and laughed. ‘It is done and they come, your world’s fate is sealed. The great warriors come from the ethereal void and will crush all of humanity beneath their feet!’ Normally, I dismiss this to the nonsense that evil creatures spew. But this was different, and it stirred both curiosity and dread deep in my soul. I searched the corpse and found a rune with etchings I had never seen before clasped in the beast’s hand. Being emboldened by my combat prowess in this realm, I cast Sacred Journey and ventured forth to this unknown location.

My eyes were greeted by scenes of death and the smell of rotting corpses in a large field. Humans were dismembered and half eaten, all manners of humanity met their demise in this field. Warriors, mages, women, and children; death cared not and it’s appetite was endless. Slowly I ventured forth and peered into a valley, and I saw it. A great army of beasts! Orcs, ogres, titans and all foul beasts were working in unison. It was a sea of axes shining in the sun and a symphony of evil being chanted from the masses. In the center I saw nine mages casting a powerful spell on a large obelisk, like the ruins we find in our fair land. It all made sense. The dead orc mage had found this land, through some cursed magic, and had given this evil army knowledge of our homeland. The mages appeared to be attempting some type of massive gate spell to transport this army of darkness. I began to slip back to warn the Royal Guard and bring re-enforcements, but that is when I came face to face with a beast I had never encountered before.

Before me stood a group of orcs and ogres, and they were all answering to an obvious leader. His laugh was chilling, but his mass was daunting. Bigger than any Ogre Lord I have ever seen in Despise’s deepest depths. ‘Stand back my brethren and I will show you how easy it is to slay a human’ he bellowed to his pack of foot soldiers. Before I knew it he was upon me, he is as fast as lightning. His first blow stunned me and his second took me within inches of my life. My swampy, ever faithful, knew things were going badly and ran before I could even think the command. It chased me for hours, never allowing me rest. It was stronger and faster than those enchanted beast in the land of Ilshenar. Eventually, we opened enough distance and with my last conscious thought I cast on the first rune I could find. Then next thing I know, I’m waking up to your ugly face!

Friend, I believe the invasion could happen any moment and I fear for our land. There will be much death and I am not sure we can defeat that number of beasts, much less their leaders! So be forewarned, but I stand ready to defend our land with my last breath." With that, Tek fell back into slumber. Kronos opened a portal and sent Tek to a healer in Haven, "Rest friend, you will be cared for well. I will come get you when it is time."

Not good news was the only thought racing through Kronos’ mind. Soon it was joined by others, "Tek is a mighty warrior, and he was unable to handle the foul beast by himself. That does not happen often and, when it does, the beast is usually alone and can be handled with a little support. But this number of beasts coming to our land? How shall we win? Is death not certain?" As Kronos dwelled upon these thoughts, his eyes drifted into the valley and saw a small town. The children were playing and the mothers were laughing as they oversaw the land’s future protectors. A tear crept into Kronos’ eye, for fear of humanity’s future. It was then that a mantra from a great warrior entered Kronos’ mind, "Live Free, Die Well." There is but one choice. "Liz, we ride. Maybe to our deaths but certainly in noble pursuit. We must alert the Order of Truth, for only in numbers do we have any hope. And if the powers of good are willing, we will live to see next week." With that Kronos took another deep breath, savoring yet again the sweetness of life; perhaps for the last time, because a storm of death approaches with the pending invasion of evil.

Publish 29 Events & Activities

(Ed. Note: This Event Ended 3/1/05)

Starting Tuesday, January 18th, UO will launch a new player activity with an invasion of Britain in Trammel and Felucca that will continue into the coming weeks.  We have activated the guild to fight this invasion of our capital city and win the war against the vile monsters who would take over the fairest jewel of Britannia!  We cannot allow the monsters of the realm to take control and turn Britannia into a conquered and enslaved land!

We will gather each night for a hunt at the closest guildmember-owned house to the invasion.  Meet at El's Swamp house, "La Vie en Rose," North of Brit at 9:00 p.m. every evening to go hunting with a group against the invasion monsters.  There are runes locked-down at the Guild Hall, Veritas Vendors, and Versace, Inc. to this house if you don't already have a rune!

Alternative hunting opportunities can be suggested if/when the invasion peters out!

"The Task"

December, 2004

As told by Kronos

As the ale provided the much needed refreshment, Kronos was content with the moment.  As he watched the dancing flames chase the smoke, he allowed the fire’s warmth to ease fatigued muscles and the ale relaxed a battle frenzied mind.  In his mind’s eye, he was pleased that his chores were done; evil had been beaten back for another day, his blades had been freshly sharpened, armor repaired and stowed, and his faithful swampy lounged happily in her stable.  But what brought the warmest smile to his face were the recent memories of glory on the field of battle.  The sound of blades singing through the air, the sight of arrows flying fast and true to fell foul beast, smells of sulfurous ash as lightning danced from outstretched hand and the whisper of death enticing evil creatures into her eternal hold.  Aye, it was glorious, but what made it special was not so much the action or even the new gold now stored away, but the individuals who ruled on the field.  To see one’s friends charge into death’s reach, to lift up as one a battle cry that shook heaven’s pillars and filled villainous hearts with dread, to battle side by side reinforcing strengths and mitigating weakness, and to walk away laughing, victorious, and smirking at death’s frustration was the real joy.  Kronos savored the feeling and let out a hearty laugh.

Kronos, have you gone mad?  Sitting all alone, drinking, and laughing?  It’s just not right to be merry alone, so where is the honey mead and cake?”  Followed by an infectious laugh, Kronos didn’t even need to alter his gaze to realize who had entered his home.  “Elessa, being a controller of mystic powers and pursuer of truth, you should know exactly where I keep the spirits.”  With a giggle and courtesy, El took a long pull on one of Kronos’ finest, and thought to be hidden, bottles.  “I do.  Now why are you in such a jovial mood?”   And Kronos began to share his contentment and joy over the day’s group hunt.  As the conversation progressed and El agreed that the group hunts were indeed a pleasurable way to spend time with friends, she stated the obvious.  “It sounds if that is one of your favorite things to do, yes?  I thought so, and I believe the others enjoy the outings just as much.  So, we should do it more.”  Before Kronos could open his mouth to voice his agreement, she continued “The Order of Truth hunts well together, and there is much to be gained in collective effort.  In addition to all the fun, there are valuable resources, such as gold, hides, reagents, and ore, which can be harvested from this land’s foul creatures.  So, because you seem to enjoy it so much, I believe you should begin to put forth effort developing this more fully.  Now, I really must be going.”  A flash of light and Kronos was again alone with his thoughts, minus a really nice bottle of honey mead.  Another smile broke across his face as visions of future hunts began to replace the day’s memories; this is going to be fun

Order of Truth Events Calendar

Ok fellow members of the Order of Truth, we are going to start having regular hunting events.  I am seeking some feedback, so please ICQ me at #219744783 to give me your thoughts.  Here are my initial thoughts:

Two (2) hunts per week. (Seeking convenient times from members)
One hunt will be to test our abilities and general fun.  (Ideas welcome)
One hunt will be to farm resources to support guild member training objectives.  The crafts are the most obvious skill to support through the collective hunting of resources; however, I believe all skills can be supported through collective hunts.
Here I am looking for each of you to communicate to me what is the number one thing that you are developing right now and what resources, whatever it might be (even scrolls), would support your efforts.  As a group, I believe we can help each person reach their individual goals in a more efficient & effective manner.
Based on the feedback, I will randomly sequence the “Resource Hunts” to provide support for each character and their desired support need.  All individuals will know who we are hunting to support and what we are looking for prior to the hunt.
This website will have weekly updates on the previous hunts and the upcoming events.  If you know how to take screen pictures to act as a photographer, that would be great and I will try to include all photographs submitted.
ICQ, or similar means, will be used to allow for efficient communication.
All hunts will have a standard starting time and location once established.

I believe this could be a tremendous amount of fun, beneficial to all, and desire to make it as good as possible.  So, again, please send me any thoughts via my ICQ address #219744783.

Looking Forward to the Hunt
