Saiyans are a fighting race that are born to fight! An ability that they have is the ability to change into a giant Saiyan Monkey, this can only happen during a full moon. That is not a real big thing if you know about Saiyans, because every Saiyan with a tail can do that when there is a full moon. But something that many people don't know too much about, that is the legendary Super Saiyan!
It was once said that there was a Super Saiyan 3000 years ago, but the thing about this Saiyan was that he didn't know how to control the power. So he ended up staying in monkey form. The bad thing about this was that he ended up blowing up a moon and himself because of his great power. Now the legend was said to be true, but only the Saiyans really believed it. Nobody else every really believed it.
There was not another Super Saiyan for a long time so the legend was starting to look false! But then a Saiyan that you would never expect showed everyone what a Saiyan has the ability to do. He made the legend a real life experience for Frieza and everyone else! And that Saiyan's name was Goku. Everyone expected Vegeta to become the first even I did. But when Goku seen his best friend die before his eyes he got so angry that he transformed. He wasn't even trying because he never knew that he had the ability to turn to Super Saiyan level one! But Super Saiyan one was more then enough to destroy Lord Frieza because that level one brought his power level to 3,000,000!!
The next Saiyan to perform this amazing transformation was Future Trunks. When Future Trunks came from the future his power level was 4,000,000 in regular form but when he turned Super Saiyan his power level went up to 18,000,000. Vegeta was so enraged that he isn't a Super Saiyan that he goes and trains just o become Super Saiyan level one. Then after that Gohan and Goten become Super Saiyans.
Now out of the two seasons Dragonball Z, and GT the highest that a Saiyan gets is Super Saiyan level four! I will explain to you what each form looks like! Every transformation that a Saiyan does their power level increases ten folds, Super Saiyans folds are worth millions and elite folds are worth 1,000, and average Saiyan folds 100-500.
Special Note: Only those full blooded Saiyans or those with at least 1/4 Saiyan can transform to Super Saiyan Level
Physical Changes:Hair turns to a yellow color, eyes turn green, Power level raises about ten elite Folds. All senses increase; hearing, sight sense, speed and strength. For a Saiyan to reach this level a Saiyan must train up to the level of a Super Saiyan. A Saiyan can have a power level of a Super Saiyan and never transform. To transform the Saiyan must raise it's anger and desire for revenge. The heart must be filled with hate and force the body to explode into fury and raise the power level.
When Reached:This form was first reached by Goku during the Frieza saga after witnessing Krillin killed before his eyes. Then it was reached by Vegeta and Gohan in the Room of Spirit and Time while Training for the Arrival of the Androids. Mirai Trunks reached this level after being trained by Gohan and then witnessing him die. It was reached by Goten and Chibi Trunks easily as if second nature.

Fused Saiyans at level: Gogeta, Vegito, Gotenks
Physical Changes:In this form the hair gets a little bit longer and more yellow. They get a lot faster and quicker and all senses increase much more. Eye's remain green. Power level increases about ten Super Saiyan folds. To reach this level the Saiyan must have already reached Saiyan 1 and pushed harder past the level and become more enraged.
When Reached:Goku reaches this level in the Room of Spirit and Time. Gohan reaches this level during the Cell Game after the death of Android16 after all of his friends were attacked by the Cell Jrs.Vegeta reaches this level while being under the control of Babidi.

Fused Saiyans at level:Gogeta, Vegito, Gotenks
Physical Changes: Hair becomes extremely long and more of a gold hue, the hair is almost comparible to gold-like Raditz hair. The eyebrows disappear and the forehead enlarges. Speed, technique, and power increases immensely. There are two forms of this, one being normal SS 3 and a fully powered up form of SS3. In the fully powered, the Saiyans power level and attacks are so powerful that he wastes a lot of energy this way. Power increases ten Super Saiyan folds.
When Reached:Goku reached this level in the next dimension after the Cell Game. Gotenks reached this level after training in the Room of Spirit and Time.

Physical Changes:This is a stage that must be reached before the Saiyan can reach Super Saiyan 4. It is accomplished when a Super Saiyan with a tail looks at the Planet Earth from the Planet Plant. Like a regular Saiyan looking at the moon, the Saiyan increases their power level ten super saiyan folds(in Saiyan monkey it raises ten fold, elite or average saiyan fold), the saiyan grows to an enormous size and for sometime is uncontrollable. After this stage is reached it is easy for the Saiyan to attain Super Saiyan Level 4.
When Reached:Goku reaches this level on planet Plant, fighting against Bebi after Kaioushin regrew Goku's tail. And just as before, in regular Saiyan mokey form, he loses all control under this transformation. Bebi-Vegeta reaches this level on planet Plant thanks to the gadget that Bulma makes for him to shoot him with Brute Waves.Vegeta reaches this level after fighting against Lii Shen Long with the same gadget that Bulma had invented.
Saiyans at level:Goku, Bebi-Vegeta, and Vegeta
Physical Changes:The hair remains black, there is red fur covering the whole body except for chest, hands, and face there eyes turn evil looking and the eyes are surrounded by red. Also the Saiyan appears to be smaller and muscular and a cross between a Saiyan and a Saiyan monkey. Note: In the fused Gogeta Super Saiyan 4, the hair is red and eyebrows are red also.Eyes become evil looking and black surrounded by red! Is only reached in GT. Increases 10 Super Saiyan folds. This is the highest Super Saiyan Level ever reached and by far the most powerful. In this level, everything increases, speed, technique, energy, and raw power!
When Reached:Goku reaches this level on planet Plant, fighting against Bebi-Vegeta, thanks to the words of Pan. Vegeta reaches this level fighting against Lii Shen Long with the help of the same gadget that Bulma built.
