Jesse Hutchinson, Jr., was the Hutchinson Family's only successful lyricist; and it is a wonder that his brothers didn't make use of his remaining verses after his death. Perhaps they didn't know about them or had lost track of much of what Jesse wrote, though we know that someone or other still had his writing portfolio three or four decades later.

I put together a "new" song by Jesse Hutchinson, Jr. All of its lyrics are drawn from two quite direct songs he wrote, following the popular uprisings in Europe in 1848. Both were to be sung to the tune, "Buena Vista." Here it is:

Three Hearty Cheers

'Tis a glorious year in which we live, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

And now three hearty cheers we'll give, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

On every breeze glad tidings roll,

And echoes bound from pole to pole.

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

'Tis a glorious day for liberty, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Behold the shout comes o'er the sea, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

And here in our own native land

We'll give the heroes heart and hand.

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Then freemen let your welcome pour, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

'Til the sounds are heard on every shore, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

All parties are rallying to the test

From the North and East and glorious West.

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

The good time, boys, is coming near, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

And myriad hearts shall bless this year, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

The orator's tongue and poet's pen

All tell us where, and how, and when.

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

The good time coming is hastening on, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

When the right shall triumph over wrong, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

And woman's voice shall glad be heard,

And equal rights shall be the word.

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

'Tis a glorious year in which we live, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

And now three hearty cheers we'll give, hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

On every breeze glad tidings roll,

And echoes bound from pole to pole.

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hurrah! hurrah! hurrah!

Hutchinson Family

The original songs, that were blended to make this one, were written about specific recent events; and the interest of many fans could be expected to decline with the passage of time. But those verses included here are among the more general in nature; and it seems to me that, taken together, they could have given Jesse's brothers yet another rousing reform anthem for their programs.

This is but one example of the worthwhile verses, left behind by Jesse, which curiously seem never to have found their way into the Hutchinson Family repertoire.
