My name is Darren Green and when I started this page in 1996, I was a Marketing major at the University of Massachusetts. It's an amazing school and the campus is gigantic. But if you try, it can be as small as you want it to be. There is an incredible amount of diversity here. There are people here from all over the world ranging from Africa, Korea, Alaska, Hawaii, and California, to small towns like Andover, MA (where Leo Blais and Jay Leno are from).

Family

My family means a lot to me. Both of my parents teach at J.P. Stevens. My brother, Adam, graduated in 1998 from The George Washington University as a Political Science major.  He is currently a third year law student at the University of Virginia.  He will be a great politician someday. He's worked on both of President Clinton's campaigns as well as on Bill Bradley's campaign.  When Bill Clinton was running for president, he showed a picture of him and President Kennedy; well this is also something Adam could use during his campaign. On January 3, 2002 Adam is picking up and moving out to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to be press secretary for Senator Tim Johnson's re-election campaign. I am very proud of him.

Friends

This section is in the process of being written now. My good group of friends from UMass, now lives a few blocks down the street from me. There are more edits to come. Here is a picture of Leo and James in Amherst.

In late January of 2002 a couple of the guys and I went to Killington for the weekend. Six guys and I was the only one skiing, unbelievable. They met me at the summit (or bigger for a little while. It was cool....literally. Pictured are Matt "Dead Matt" Cole, Dan Taylor, Me, James Quinn, Ryan "Soup" Wall, and Brian "Rapper" Rabuffetti. In the evening we went to Outback Pizza. It was a little expensive just getting in the door, but worth it for the food, atmosphere, music, dancing, and free tattoo.

Post Graduate: The Real World

Well, I am at last in the real world. (This section has been erased due to so many changes. For more updates go to my new website. )

UMass

Freshman Year Sophomore Year
Half of Junior Year Senior Year

In the Spring of 1999, I spent the semester abroad on the SS Universe Explorer as a participant on Semester at Sea.  This was the most inspring, educational, and meaningful 100 days of my life.  In our travels we went to all of these countries.
Nassau, Bahamas Havana, Cuba Salvador, Brazil
Cape Town, South Africa Mombasa, Kenya
Madras, India
Penang, Malaysia Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Hong Kong, China
Shanghai, China
Osaka, Japan
Seattle, United States of America

Yes, Road Rules came with us. Here is a picture of Pua and me from my 21st birthday in South Africa.  They attempted to bribe the students with Jansport backpacks with the Road Rules Semester at Sea insignia on it, which most of the students traded for merchandise in different countries.  It was funny to go into a shop somewhere in the middle of nowhere and see a bag from SAS.  It's just saying "We've come, We saw. We left things behind." I went to the townships in South Africa with Operation Hunger. These pictures are of children who live in literally shacks. On my 21st birthday, I ate ostrich for the first time. Christina joined me.

Personally I loved Malaysia the best.  Reason:  Independent travel.   With Semester at Sea sponsored trips I saw every tourist stand on the continent.   Traveling by myself I met the people of the countries not the store keepers.   My friends Rindy and Matt traveled with me.  I will forever treasure our adventures with the cab driver Chow Lam and his son Chow Lam (Jr).

In Hong Kong, I went to the top of Victoria's Peak. It was a cold rainy day, pretty much like April 25, 2000. Here is a picture of me, Shabby, and Christina. Though that doesn't do Shabby very well. Here is her in her graduation "gown" on Semester at Sea.
In Boston, alumni from my voyage and several other voyages get together monthly for an international themed dinner.

High School Memories

To let you know a little bit about myself,

I went to John P. Stevens High School in Edison, New Jersey. The site is under construction, so there are actually two of them. Here is a link to the second J.P.S. page. I was in the class of 1996. I was most active in the JP Stevens Ski Club, coincindentally run by my father for over thirty years. Since I graduated even the club has its own webpage. The school is a perfect model of what the United Nations would like to see. The school has an diverse set of students from all over the world.

My first web experience was in 10th grade when my friend, Rajib Pal, put me on his Yale homepage. He's since graduated and the site is no longer up. He taught me the basics of making a page. Raj's Palace on the WEB was the name.

At J.P. Stevens, I had a good time. There was a good group of friends that I hung out with:

  • Andrea, a  friend I have, just graduated from Barnard, part of Columbia.
  • One of my best friends, Adam, graduated from the University of Minnesota. He plans to stay in Minnesota for a few more years, but he's otherwise pretty sane.
  • My friend Chris graduated from Johnson and Wales Culinary. He's the head chef of a bakery in New Jersey. This picture is from the Senior prom with his ex-girlfriend.
  • Finally, there is one of my best pal's Bobby. He goes to Rutgers University in New Jersey. Bobby is in the six year Pharmacy program. He's on pharmacy rotations now. He was also a "Mr. India New York" winner, and as a result of that, a Cable TV show host on the side.

Hobbies and Adventures

It's been way too long since I did any journal entries in here. So here are a couple of my most recent adventures. Weekend on Nantucket 2001.

Friends Literally Pain Me/ ER.

Weekend on Nantucket 2002.

I like theater and adventures. I sail, scuba dive, snowski (Adam and me), water-ski, skydive (hanging, landing),and am a Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor (expired 2002). I always wear the same shirt when I ski. Look at it; it just feels good and gets a cool reaction from people. (Stopped after college) I love traveling. Over the 1996 winter break, my parents, Adam, and I went to the island of St. Lucia. It was beautiful. The sunset over the Pitons (twin peak mountains) was great. I took that picture.

Jewish Life on Campus
Sophomore year I became much more involved with Hillel at Umass. During winter break (1997) about 40 of us went to Israel for 10 days. Along with a few others I stayed an extra 10 days. Over the summer I went to the Schusterman Hillel International Student Leaders Assembly that was in Honsdale, Pennsylvania. That is where I met last year's JCSC u> (or at least some of them).

I earned two credits for keeping this journal about the trip. Click Journal. to read it. The links on this pages aren't up. They were lost when I graduated from college.
