Chingy - Jackpot

Chingy burst onto the national rap scene after hooking up with Ludacris and the DTP crew. The former opening act for Nelly & the St. Lunatics had a huge following with a local hit single "Right Thurr" which soon swept the nation. The debut album features Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Murphy Lee, I-20, Tity Boy, Trina, & Jermaine Dupri.

1. Jackpot Intro-- casino style intro of the slot machine payin off

2. He's Herre-- this track has some poundin basslines along with a midtempo synthesizer beat. Chingy brings that STL slanguage to the table with the draggin out of the "urrr" at the end of his words. It's a decent track.

3. Represent (f/ I-20 & Tity Boy)-- this track has a midtempo beat with more of the pounding basslines and space age pimpin synthesizers. Chingy starts it off with a decent verse about representin for the hood. Tity Boy of DTP is up next with come catchy punchlines. I-20 finishes the song out in his unique deepened rap voice with a verse about shuttin down the clubs. Tight song worth checkin out.

4. Right Thurr-- unless you've been in a cave, you probably hear this song in your sleep because it's been played so many times on the radio and on your favorite video channel. I guess that's what you call a breakout single from the STL native. Basically your typical club song that radio tends to kill until even your unborn children get sick of hearing it. Nice at first, but quickly loses luster simply because of radio overkill.

5. Jackpot The Pimp (skit)

6. Wurrs My Cash-- this track is the trailer song at the end of the Right Thurr video. It has a beat that sounds like a funkadelic version of Nelly's "Air Force Ones" beat. Chingy raps in a more lazy style on this one...almost singing. The song is designed to be a pimpin song tellin the girl to "slang that ass". It's an alright song.

7. Chingy Jackpot-- this track has a really nice beat with a good tempo to it. Chingy comes thru with a catchy song on this one. You can't help but start to nod ya head to it. The hook goes "Chingy, why your eyes so chinky? - Is it because you've been smokin that icky? - I'm been thinkin, maybe you can come get me - wine and dine me, take me home and hit me". Nice song.

8. Sample Dat Ass (f/ Murphy Lee)-- this track is a fun clubby dance song designed to get ya movin in the clubs. Chingy starts it off with a verse about hookin up with a girl. The chorus on this one goes "ooh ooh let me get a sample of dat ass". Murphy Lee comes thru with a nice verse with a tight flow that steals the show from Chingy. Nice song.

9. One Call Away (f/ J-Weave)-- this track is on a laid back, mellow tip with guitars and a knockin bassline. Chingy actually sounds tight on this one simply because the song is a little different than the previous songs on the album. The change of pace is refreshing because Chingy's style of rap was starting to get tired. The material is still about chasing that girl but the delivery and style is a little slower and it helps keep the interest for the listener. Very nice song.

10. Dice Game (skit)

11. Gettin It-- this track has a lot of brass to go along with the clappin of the snare bassline. The tempo moves back up with this song with another effort to please the club scene (mainly the females). This song was also included in the 2 Fast 2 Furious soundtrack. If you're not feelin it in the first 30 seconds of the song, skip it.

12. Holidae In (f/ Ludacris & Snoop Dogg)-- another example of the radio overkill of a song. The hook "whatcha doin? Nothin chillin at the Holidae In" has been in our ears for most of the fall and the winter. Ludacris is the standout artist with some off the wall punchlines. Better song if you're in the club simply because of what the females once the song hits the dancefloor.

13. Juice-- The chorus goes "Juice these hoes - Juice these hoes - all my playas grab your nuts and juice these hoes". It's funny because Chingy isn't able to pull off the harder songs he's going for because of his "nice guy" delivery. I can see what he's trying to accomplish, but it doesn't work".

14. Fuck Dat Nigga (skit)

15. Madd At Me-- this track has a Timbaland-esque beat mixed in with horns. Chingy raps about all the haters out there who are jealous of his fame and fortune. A good song after one listen but by now, the album is starting to get stale.

16. Bagg Up-- this track is the one song NOT produced by the Trackstarz. It's actually a good thing because at this point on the album, the beats start to sound the same with very little variety. Another clubby song with Chingy at the helm. Been there, done that.

17. Right Thurr (remix)(f/ Jermaine Durpi & Trina)-- this was another single released by Chingy which happened to be the remix to his biggest song of the year. Jermaine Durpi does a nice job as does Trina on their verses. To me, I like this better than the original. A fitting way to end the album to tie everything together.

Overall, the production from the Trackstarz is decent but doesn't give you a whole lot of variety since they pretty much every song. Chingy's flow, although many will claim stolen from fellow STL native Nelly, is fine at first but quickly becomes tired. The content on the album doesn't give you much variety either. This is a good album full of club songs and it serves it's purpose well. But Chingy's guest appearances on other rapper's albums have shown that he can come with a mean streak and harder lyrics and that's where he shines. As long as he and his fans are content with a more bubble gum style, Chingy will do just fine when it comes to album sales. But if the masses rebel against him, he's in trouble if he doesn't give us more variety on a follow-up album.
