Big Tymers - "Hood Rich"

Big Tymers, Baby & Mannie Fresh, follow-up their platinum album "I Got That Work" with "Hood Rich." This album gave me a different feel from past Big Tymers album--not lyrically (because they still rap about cars and platinum) but in terms of the beats. With the addition of Jazze Pha as producer on a couple of tracks, it gives Cash Money Records a freshness on the beats that they haven't seen in their last few albums.

1. Slick Talkin (intro)-- just your typical Cash Money intro.

2. Oh Yeah!-- nothing really special about this track. Boo & Gotti make an appearance on this track. I could really do without the female R&B hook. For some reason, I could see this song released as a single because it seems like every rap single these days have to have an R&B hook.

3. Still Fly-- the first single from the album which is one of the tightest songs on the CD. I know some people don't like this song but I think it's a pretty innovative song. Tight beat to it.

4. Sunny Day-- the best song on the album in my opinion. Here is where you get the Jazze Pha beat kickin in. When you listen to this track, it is not what you typically expect from a Cash Money beat. TQ sings the hook and complements the rapping well. Just a tight track you can ride to. Baby & Mannie lay down nice verses.

5. The Preppy Pimp-- telephone skit

6. Hello-- this song gives me a west coast feel to it. Songs like something Dr. Dre would produce. Mannie Fresh and a female both sing on this track. Yep, Mannie singing. Not exactly what I wanna hear. I think they should have done more with the beats in the middle of the song where the talkin occurs. You have to listen to this track to know what I'm talkin about here. A waste of the good beat for this track.

7. #1-- this is a nice song in my opinion. Your typical Cash Money track about cars. Baby does lay down some nice verses.

8. I'm Comin-- Jazze Pha contributes to the hook on this track. Pretty nice song. You get a verse from Mickey & TQ on here as well. Nice beats from Jazze Pha.

9. Greg Street Countdown-- skit with Greg Street talking doing his radio show for those stuck in traffic

10. Gimme Some-- TQ sings the hook on this track as well as singing the first verse. By this time, I'm starting to get tired of the R&B on this album. This track almost seems like it's a TQ song remix with Big Tymers instead of a Big Tymers track featuring TQ. Not really feelin that track.

11. Big-- your typical Big Tymers song about big cars, big stars, big cities, big titties, etc. Kinda feelin the heavy bass beat though. Nice verses from Baby.

12. Get High-- sounds like a Jazze Pha beat since this isn't what you usually hear from Mannie Fresh. Jazze is singing trading bars with a half-rappin/half singin Mannie Fresh. Mannie actually sounds pretty tight there on that verse. Pretty good song.

13. Pimpin-- another Cash Money track about their cars, money, and women. Not that bad of a track though but at this point, I'm wishing this was Baby's solo album because I'm getting tired of Mannie Fresh's verses.

14. Put That Shit Up-- this is a pretty nice track. Nice verses from Baby, Stone, & Lac. You'd almost think this is Juvenile rapping but it's Lac.

15. Greg Street Stuntin-- skit

16. Da Man-- another R&B hook on this track. Trick Daddy lays down the first verse. Pretty tight track all the way around except for the R&B hook is gettin on my nerves.

17. Lil Mama-- this is nice track. Nice beats and nice verses by Mannie & Baby.

18. Greg Street Radio-- skit- radio commercial about the Viagra Tour with Old Tymers, Big Bow Wow, Old Nasty Bastard, etc.

19. My People-- this track is OK. Nothin really special stands out on it.

Overall, I knew not to expect anything new lyrically from the Big Tymers before I listened to "Hood Rich." I knew the majority of the album would be about cars, money, women and I was correct on that assumption. The Jazze Pha tracks were a nice surprise because they stand out on an otherwise mediocre album. I was also surprise at the absence of BG, Lil Wayne, & Turk and the overwhelming number of tracks that it seemed like TQ was on. Like I said before, too much R&B on this album and too many weak Mannie Fresh verses. But if you are a Cash Money fan and don't mind listening to Mannie Fresh, you'll like this album.
