UK Trip 2005
17th April, 2005

Today, despite the threats to transport posed by the 25th London Marathon and the competing pull of a live FA Cup Semi-Final on the telly at lunchtime, it was up and off to the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth for the first of a few planned visits on this trip; so much to cover, especially with the current exhibits. Getting there was the easy bit (a pleasant, sunny stroll to Brentford station, with the bells of St Paul's Brentford pealing out in true village Sunday church style at 9am sharp, then taking the same overland train route to Waterloo used in Ray Davies' oddball musical fantasy "Return To Waterloo"). An already crammed schedule at the IWM got thrown for a major loop when the fire evacuation alarms and announcements kicked into gear around lunchtime. Turns out some genius child managed/was permitted to push an evacuation alarm. Everyone was turned out of the building, they worked out there was no fire inside ten minutes (with the help of a very Orwellian-looking black helicopter hovering above and some serious Sweeney-style action from a local Met police car), but then it took them another twenty or so to actually shut off the alarm and "reset the system". By which time the schedule was in tatters. And they didn't even parade child and parent for us to throw rotten fruit at. Oh well.
