After years of feeling slightly uncomfortable on the lesbian scene, I gave up going out. I felt the scene was too body conscious, and too conscious that mine didn't fit into the scheme of things. A brief flirt with the club Bulk in Vauxhall gave me hope, but then the organisers decided to go back to being a male space. I sat around for a while, burnt out from a few years of activism, a strenuous relationship, seemingly continual house moves, and a far amount of work. But after a while, life calmed down and I began to ponder the 'body fascist' lesbian scene. I figured that a bunch of fat dykes turning up just to have a drink and a dance would be statement enough. So, the UKFD Group was set up in October 1998. Its intention is to bring together fat dykes who feel isolated by other lesbians, society and just about any place else without decent, wide seating.
I started a little newsletter, and hoped to forge links with the dykes around Britain who joined the group. An insert in Diva and Gay Times magazines helped to spread the word, and the group swelled to its current total of 60 members, including one in Japan! Alas and alack, events overtook me again: this time my health prevented me from taking the group further, and work tailed off, meaning that the cost of sending out the UKFD newsletter has been prohibitive.
