Don't Forget!

Don Pratt was Born on 9/10/44 in Hazard, KY.  His parents had were faculty and staff at Hindman Settlement School, Hindman, Ky.

He moved to Lexington as an infant at three age and his  Father became long time employee and purchasing director for the University of Kentucky.  His mother became a pediatrics nurse at the old Good Samaritan Hospital.

Don Graduated from Bryan Station High School and spent five years of college at UK and two semesters at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor..

Work experience: Due to personal convictions, Don has been self-employed in primarily two occupations: news distribution through high school, college and (later) owner/operator of Woodland Grocery for over 25 years.  He is now semi-retired, but continues to give to the community.

He has been a single parent to over 35 foster children.  He happily adopted one daughter, now residing in Portland, Oregon and one son, at LCC.  His biological daughter is a talented photojournalist with the St. Petersburg Times.

Don's life has been filled with public activism beginning early when, on his paper route as a teenager, a young friend suffocated in an abandoned refrigerator.  The friend hid there, but was  forgotten while playing hide-and-go-seek.  Wanting to make sure that this didn't happen to anyone else,  Don wrote several letters to the editor by himself and, soon after, the first a "no doors can be left on abandoned refrigerators" law was passed.

Don Pratt's participation in activism increased with the civil rights movement and Vietnam War protests.  He openly opposed and organized against the Vietnam War and the draft.   Later, Don was honorably discharged from the Army and 2nd Lieutenant's commission, drafted and refused induction.   Tried and sentenced to 5 years in federal prison, he was incarcerated almost 2 years.  This history he shares to be honest with the public and show his willingness to stand up for his convictions.

Don Pratt is active with many advocacy organizations, currently including Kentuckians for the Commonwealth, United Nations Association, Citizen's For Ethical Government, Fayette County Neighborhood Council, Sierra Club and Amnesty International.  In his past, he was President of the  Aylesford Neighborhood Association, MS Walk Committee, Boy Scouts, Planned Parenthood, the Presbyterian Church and local and state leadership roles in Foster Parent Associations.
