Praise the Lord Everyone!
Purpose
Ujima Gospel Choir at Randolph-Macon College is a multicultural organization that adheres to Christian principles as outlined in the Bible. Our purpose is to draw others closer to the Lord through worship and praise, educate in the various styles of Gospel music, and promote unity throughout the Randolph-Macon and Ashland community. By singing this music, we aim to share the African-American culture with others as well as express spiritual principles. Ujima performs concerts and cultural programs at Randolph-Macon and for the community.
History
At the start of the 1995-96 school year, the members of the governing board of the Black Cultural Society (BCS) at Randolph-Macon College (R-MC)  agreed to set in motion activities and programs which would educate the community and increase the awareness of the African-American culture. Early in this process it was widely agreed that a Gospel Choir would be a great way to facilitate this effort and encourage unity on the R-MC campus.
To begin this process, the members of the BCS began seeking a music director. Mr. Leon Wells, an employee with Information and Technology Services at R-MC, offered to volunteer his services to get the choir underway. The next step was to select a name that would suit the purpose of the choir, thus the name
Ujima Gospel Choir was born. Ujima, one of the seven principles of the Nguzo Saba, means Collective Work and Responsibility. We feel that as a community, it is the responsibility of all people to work together in order to make the world a better place in which to live.
