Indonesia covers a land mass of 1.91 million km2 and territorial waters
nearly four times that size. In total, the country comprises 17,508 islands
stretching 5,120 km from east to west and 1,760 km north to south. The Indonesian population is approximately
203 million.
The
population is concentrated on six main islands. Java, with an area of
132,188 km2, is home to approximately
60 percent of the nations population,
or 120 million people. It is one
of the most densely populated
areas in the world.
With so
many islands, the Indonesian
Archipelago encircles a number of important commercial waterways, including the Sunda Strait, the Makassar Strait and the Malacca Strait.
Nearly
60 percent of Indonesian land is forested,
and a significant portion is mountainous and volcanic. Some mountains in Sumatra and Papua exceed
3,000 metres in height. Java itself has
112 volcanoes, including a number which are active. Volcanic activity through the ages has given the soil in Java and
Bali a high degree of fertility, which
accounts in part for the concentration of agriculture and people on the two
islands.

Volcanoes are powerful forces of nature! Molten rock
from inside the earth makes its way to the surface to relieve the pressure and
shifts happening below the earth's surface. Learn more about the basics of
where volcanoes come from, the kinds of
eruptions and the types of volcanoes.
Let's
first take a look at the earth. The earth is made up of 4 main layers-the inner
core, the outer core, the mantle and the crust. The crust is where we live, on
the surface of the earth. Below the crust lies the mantle, which is made up of
solids, liquids and gases.
The
lithosphere is made up of the crust and the upper most layer of the mantle, and
is divided up into 16 major plates. As the plates of the lithosphere shift,
they disrupt portions and pockets of the mantle below it. This disruption
causes steam and gasses within the mantle into liquid magma-these pockets of
liquid magma are called "hot spots". The liquid magma then makes its
way up through the lithosphere and erupts from onto the earth as lava. The
places where they erupt are called volcanoes.
Types of volcanic eruptions
depend on the pressure that forces the magma up, and depending on the viscosity
(how liquid the magma is) and amount of gas in the magma, eruptions vary in
size, explosiveness and danger, namely:
a.
Plinian eruptions
http://www.homeschoollearning.com/units/imglib/volcano_plinian.jpg,
the most dangerous and explosive, like the Pompeii explosion of Mount Vesuvius
(the story of Samson and Delilah).

lava outpouring onto the ground. These eruptions are less dangerous, and the
magma has lower viscosity and levels of
gas.
c.
Strombolian eruptions
http://www.homeschoollearning.com/units/imglib/volcano_strombolian.jpg irregular explosion or fountaining of
lava from a single vent or crater.
d.
Hydrovolcanic eruptions

happening near oceans and the hot magma heats the water so that it becomes
steam.
e.
Fissure Eruptions

magma flowing up through cracks in the ground and leaks out onto the surface.
