Ski Trip ‘Thredbo is Better’

We finally went on the ski trip on Saturday the 30th of June though we lost a significant number of people who wanted to go but could not. Thanks to STA travel we were able to still get a group discount even with less than the required number of people.

One word to describe the condition of the ski slope: “It is HOT, very HOT” Yes, we thought it would be freezing on the ski slopes, even Monika bought 2 bags full of extra clothes for people who might need the extra jumper or five. The sun shone very bright and the snow reflected the sun’s heat, while no wind could be felt because the beginner’s ski slope was protected by the mountains from the wind. We took the beginner’s 2 hour lesson at 11 o’clock right on midday when the sun was at its hottest. No wonder we did not last 2 hours before people started giving up due to the heat (we took our jackets off) sweat from too much exercising and muscle movement, thirsty and oh yeah the many embarrassing and annoying falls we took. Plus the amount of time and people it took to help us get up if one of us fall. It was like a rescue mission because it was so hard to stand up when you have your skis on. The ski instructor though was amazing in his ability to lift people up like Dede and Kiki with one arm. One complaint from Veril: The ski instructor did not pay enough attention to Veril like he did to the others.

Even though people complained of aching muscles at the end of the day, people said that they enjoyed the experience of being able to ski. Dede was able to ski down half of the hill even with a couple of falls and the help of the instructor, Indi managed to cover the same distance without falling and Veril ended up skiing ¾ of the hill without falling. While others like Monika, Manjuka and Wage who have skied before enjoyed being able to improve their skiing ability and had fun doing it. We even had a little adventure riding on the advanced skier’s ski lift and being scared to death by the speed and the altitude, not to mention our sore bums after sliding off the ramp on our behind instead of on our skis.

The big question of the day: Where’s Dharma (DP)? Where did he go, did anybody see DP? Apparently DP left early during the lesson to find his wife and little daughter Dasya somewhere on the ski slope. We must thank him though for helping us with getting our ski clothes from Tuggeranong  and catching up with us at Thredbo after taking Benny and family to the airport that morning at 6am.

What dedication...

PS: If you are ever on a trip in a cold bus at 5am in the morning it is always nice to have someone like Kiki or Indi to hand you their home-made hot sticky rice and meat or tuna for breakfast, yuum!!
