The University of California campuses at Berkeley & San Francisco
U
niversity of California Leadership Excellence through Advanced DegreeSUC LEADS
PROGRAMFor Sophomores and Juniors considering graduate research in
mathematics, science or engineering
Undergraduate Research
Scholars work with UC Berkeley or UC San Francisco faculty who guide students in their research projects and help them plan their graduate school strategies. Students receive funding to visit research groups at other UC campuses, attend professional and scientific society meetings, and make a research presentation at the Annual University-wide UC LEADS Symposium held each March. Funding for research supplies necessary for the successful completion of the students' project is available.
Preparation for Graduate Research Programs
Scholars have the opportunity to participate in academic enrichment programs. These programs include preparation for the GRE, scientific writing and presentation, career planning, and strategies for obtaining fellowship support.
Two Years Paid Summer Research Opportunities
UC LEADS Scholars participate in two summers of research. In the first year, UCB LEADS students will conduct research at UC Berkeley while UCSF LEADS students will conduct research at UC San Francisco. To expand the scope of the Scholars' research experience and network of faculty contacts, Scholars participate in a second summer research at a different UC campus (to be determined in cooperation with the UC LEADS Scholar, mentor, and program coordinator). Scholars are expected to commit at least 40 hours per week towards their summer research project. Scholars receive a $3000 stipend for the first summer and a $4,000 stipend for the second summer. Travel expenses to the second summer UC program are provided.
Two Years Paid Academic Year Research Opportunities
Scholars conduct research under the guidance of their faculty mentor during the academic year. The level of research commitment varies with the students' academic course load and the research agenda of the faculty mentors' research project. UCB students who are part of the UCSF LEADS Program conduct research projects at UCSF or make arrangements to continue their research at a UCB lab identified with their faculty mentor for the academic year. UCB LEADS students conduct research at UCB during the academic year. A stipend of $2,100 is provided to each Scholar over the course of the academic year.
Participation in the UC LEADS University-wide Symposium
Each March all UC LEADS Scholars from across the State are funded to participate in a three-day university-wide symposium held at one of the UC campuses. The event features:
opportunities for scholars to present posters and receive feedback on their research (required);
scientific and academic presentations by leaders in the SEM fields of study;
information about Ph.D and Masters programs across the UC system; and
opportunities to learn strategies for success in graduate school.
Eligibility
Campuses select UC LEADS Scholars according to the following eligibility criteria:
1. Enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the physical, life, or computer sciences; engineering; or mathematics at the time of selection.
2. On track to receive the baccalaureate degree at the conclusion of the second year of the UC LEADS program (beginning next fall scholars should have two academic years left in their undergraduate career).
3. Citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
4. Ability and willingness to commit to all components of the UC LEADS Program.
5. Successful applicants must also demonstrate:
A. Experiences, situations, or conditions that have adversely impacted their advancement in a science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) field of study, such as the absence of a role model in the fields of science, engineering and mathematics (SEM); absence of a family member who received a four-year college degree; or graduation from a high school with poor financial or curricular support; and
B. Commitment to and strong potential to succeed in Ph.D. or Masters programs.
Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate:
A. Outstanding potential for leadership.
B. An interest in using the Ph.D. or Masters degree to promote diversity in the science, engineering, and
mathematics fields.
C. Perseverance and commitment to educational achievement.
Objectives
UC LEADS has the following objectives:
To increase diversity of Ph.D. and Masters graduate students in the fields of science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) at the University of California.
To facilitate coordination among UC campuses to identify, encourage, mentor, and train undergraduates of high potential, so as to increase their competitiveness for admission to University of California Ph.D. programs.
To foster high quality candidates for University of California doctoral programs through faculty mentoring, experiential learning in summer research programs, and involvement in professional and scientific societies.
To prepare potential leaders in industry, government public service, and academia who will encompass the growing diversity of the state’s population and contribute to furthering diversity in the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM).
UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco actively encourage applications from individuals who are underrepresented in the graduate student and faculty populations in science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) fields of study. These groups include African Americans, Alaskan Natives (Eskimos or Aleut), American Indians, Filipino Americans, Latinos, Mexican Americans (Chicanos), and women in selected fields. However, in accordance with state law and Regents’ policy, preference in selection may not be given to applicants on the basis of race, gender, or national origin.
Applications from former participants in pre-collegiate programs such as EAOP, MESA, and Upward Bound
are actively encouraged.

UC LEADS Application
UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco are partners in recruiting for the UC LEADS Program. If accepted, you will begin by participating in a first summer research experiences that will take place at UC Berkeley (UCB LEADS) or UC San Francisco (UCSF LEADS). Academic year research and workshops will take place at UC Berkeley for UCB LEADS students and at UC San Francisco for UCSF LEADS students unless alternative arrangements for academic year placement in UCB labs is made in conjunction with your faculty mentor. [Note: If you are accepted into UCSF Leads, then you are assured placement in the UCSF Summer Research Training Program during your first summer].
Scholars can be placed at either UC Berkeley or UC San Francisco. Your chances for selection as a UCLEADS scholar are greater if you are considered for both UCSF and UCB UCLEADS programs.
