  Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina

 

  • Workload: 8-12 patients per day starting 7:30am-4:00pm

  • Primary care: The majority of patients are under 50 years old with the average patient being 30 years old.

  • Doctors: Nice and laid back, but doesn't offer advice or opinions unless you ask.

  • Lodging: Base billeting, a military hotel w/ free maid service and laundry included,  for $13.50 a night.  Rooms include microwave, refrigerator, TV, and VCR

  • Entertainment: Free access to most of the facilities including the gym, track, bowling alley, movie theater, library, etc.

  • Advice: I would suggest a car to anyone who comes. (good for weekend trips)

  • Most interesting things seen on this rotation: Full thickness corneal perforation with an iris tear 10 minutes after this guy had a wire stuck in his eye and the aqueous had leaked out.

     

Oklahoma City, OK

 

  • Workload: 60/day; 7:30 am - 5:30 pm M-F

  • Primary care: The majority of patients are under 50 years old with the average patient being 30 years old.

  • Doctors: Wonderful! One has a master's in education, another is well known nationwide and sees patients once a week, lectures around the nation the rest of the time.

  • Lodging: Apartment provided by the office is 3 minutes away by car.

  • Entertainment: Drove to Dallas, saw Redhawk's baseball games, went waterskiing on the many lakes here, shopping, movies, watched outdoor musicals

  • Advice: I would suggest a car to anyone who comes. (good for weekend trips)

  • Most interesting things seen on this rotation: Surgery performed by ODs!

Barnet Dulaney Perkins Eye Center, Phoenix, AZ
  • Workload: You see about 10 pts per day, about 6 to 7 full exams.  Otherwise pressure checks, pre and post ops.  There are four day weeks, with Fridays off.  7:30am to 5:30pm. 

  • Primary care: Mainly older population, from ages 55+,  lots of CAT evals, GLC dx and management, diabetic retinopathy, ARMD, other retinal conditions and surgeries and ERs on occasion.  We also see LASIK post ops.

  • Doctors: Dr. Pinkert is a very knowledgeable.  Very demanding, and you learn to be efficient real fast.  Learn and see lots of ocular disease, but you have to ask questions.

  • Lodging: There is an apartment Dr. Pinkert provides, however NEWENCO and SCCO gets first prioritiy, so if you lucky you can also stay there too.

  • Entertainment: The location is great.  Two upper class shopping malls with in 10 min driving.  Also 10 min away is Old town Scottsdale, where there are is lots of bars and night clubs.  Everything is pretty high class. Great happy hours and sushi.  Movies and lots of restaurants right around the area.  Don't forget the Bank One Ball park to watch the Diamondbacks.  There's good hiking on Mount Camalback, and some other places a little further away. 

  • Advice: It's a great rotation to have. Very demanding and you learn to be real efficient.  You do not get spoon fed at all, and you have to ask questions to learn. Dr. Pinkert is a great clinical resource. 

  • Most interesting things seen on this rotation: A retinal detachment that took the macula off.  A very hemorrhagic CRVO, and most rare thing:  MEWDS.
