"JENSEN SESSIONS"

U2 BBC Radio One Session 1981

Broadcast Date 14th October 1981
Recording Date unknown. Help?

01 Boy-Girl
02 With a Shout
03 I Threw a Brick through a Window
04 Scarlet

Recorded for the David Jensen Show on BBC Radio One.
Jensen was an early proponent of U2 and I remember him playing their material frequently at this time.
This features the only alternative version of Scarlet that I am aware of.
The recording of the track "Boy-Girl" may be as a farewell to the track on the bandīs part as it
was by this point no longer a part of U2 live sets.

Source Info
This is from a 3rd generation or above recording of the session. I hope that someone can one day come
up with a better version.
A little hiss was removed and I tampered with the AM radio distortion on track 3. Other than that, the
tracks are in the form in which I found them.
All weekday, pre-midnight BBC Radio One broadcasts were on AM (frequency 275/285)until the mid eighties.
The Jensen show went out between 20:00 and 22:00. The recording may well, therefore have been mastered
for mono broadcasting so I have not tampered with that.
The use of right and left channels is only to enable SHN encoding. Both channels are the same.

"SOMETHING ELSE"

U2 BBC 2 Something Else
Broadcast Date 1982 (Probably about April)

01 Rejoice
02 I Will Follow
03 With a Shout

All tracks start and end abrubtly. This is not due to bad editing but due to the
introductions/links on the TV show itself.
Recorded for the BBC youth TV show "Something Else" which ran for only 3 months or so.

Source Info
This is from a low generation copy of the show.
The person I traded with also provided me this show in a VERY good video copy so it was
either 1st or second generation.
Unfortunately the video is something no longer have and it is to my lasting regret as this
was the first time I saw U2 on TV.
It made a huge impression.

If anyone has a copy of the video then I would dearly love to have it again. For sentimental reasons.
Contact DBMTB in the ElevaSHN forum at Yahoo Groups.

I distinctly remember that the theme of the show that week was spirituality in music. (See the choice of tracks)

I hope that someone can one day come up with a better version.

A tiny amount of hiss was removed. Other than that, the tracks are in the form in which I found them.
All BBC TV broadcasts were on AM frequencies until the mid nineties.
The recording may well, therefore have been mastered for mono broadcasting so I have not tampered with it.
The use of right and left channels is only to enable SHN encoding. Both channels are the same.

I am making this available as a temporary solution as I have NEVER seen this on anyones trading lists.

"WHISTLE TEST"

U2 Belfast BBC Studios
8th March 1987

01 Exit
02 In Gods Country

This is a performance, broadcast on BBC2s now-defunct "Whistle Test" program.

The band played 4 other tracks - People Get Ready, a short improvised number, Southern Man and Pride.
(These were not broadcast)
According to a contemporary review of the performance in the NME, the final 2 tracks were only played as the band got
swept away by the occasion.

The other tracks are in circulation on the "4 Wild Irish Roses" CD, together with these two,
but the sound quality is inferior to these recordings.

Mono broadcast from TV (Stereo TV broadcasting was unknown in the UK until the mid-nineties)
Recorded onto a BASF video tape on an unknown brand of VCR (this was 15 years ago and the memory fails)
This is a direct copy of that broadcast, not a copy of a copy.
The tape was believed lost between 1989 and January 2002 and there was some sound and picture deterioration.
This resulted in some extensive hiss after the transfer via Line In on a Sound Blaster Live.

No less than 4 filters were required using the Sonic Foundry Noise Reducion Plug-in
EQ has not been adjusted as this was not necessary.
Some of the treble nuances are unfortunately lost.

The files are available in the original mono (recommended)
or in artificailly simulated stereo (multi-tap and stereo widening added in Sound Forge)

"THE TUBE"

U2 Tube Farewell April 1987

Lost Highway

This was recorded in a hotel Room in San Diego
Bono sings and stamps the rhythm on the floor
Edge plays his Wahburn acoustic
Larry plays a wooden chair arm (!) with his drumsticks
Adam plays ....... a cigarette.

I recorded this on a BASF video tape the day it was broadcast (mono) and had forgotten I had the tape.
Unfortunately the sound has deteriorated a little so I had to clean it up using Sound
Forge and the Noise Reduction plug-in
I still think it sounds better than the recordings of it I have otherwise heard.

This is available as
1) Mono wav file (recommended)
2) Artificially generated stereo (Multi tap delay and Stereo Widening) SH files

"LATE LATE SHOW"

U2 RTE studios Febuary 1987

01) Springhill Mining Disaster
02) Interview

This is from a tribute show to the Dubliners, prior to the Joshua Tree tour.

U2 played a storming version of this Peggy Seeger song.
At one point Bonos voice drops out.
It sounds very emotional but is actually a problem with the microphone.

This was recorded onto a BASF video tape, direct during broadcast.
Because of the tapeīs age (it was presumed missing in action for nearly 15 years)
there has been a loss of sound quality.
I still believe that this version, with a known source, sounds better than the other versions
I have come across over the last 3 years. Hiss was removed using sonic foundry noise reduction.
EQ was adjusted in the interview to remove an annoying bass rumble

This is available in 2 versions
1) Original mono as WAV (recommended)
2) Artificially generated stereo (multi.tap delay and stereo widening added)

"TOP OF THE POPS"

U2 1992

01) One

Recorded during rehearsals for the Zoo TV tour.
Broadcast live via satellite for Top of The Pops (BBC1)

This is an interesting performance. The band looks like the Joshua Tree period U2.
No shades. No Patent Leather. No Black.
Considering that the Zoo TV concept was already a reality, it was surprising to see U2
in the old version at the time.

I recorded this on a Maxell tape when the show was broadcast.

A little hiss had to be removed, which affected the guitar sound a little,
but the hiss was more annoying.

This is available as
1) The original mono WAV (recommended)
2) Artificially generated stereo SHN
