Paintball has been around since the early 80's. The first ever paintball
markers were designed by Nelson Paint Company for the purpose of
marking tree's or cattle. It was during this time, that Nelson noticed that
people were using these markers to play war games. Seeing the potential,
Nelson created a line of markers in order to profit from the game.

Since the early 80's, the game's image has changed greatly.
During its childhood stage of the game, Paintball wasn't recognized as a
port but more of a bunch of rednecks shooting at eachother.
With views such as this, it was very difficult for the game to become
more public. The markers of this time were rather simple; usually
bolt/pump action and were designed to carry 10-14 paintballs powered
by a single twelve gram CO2.

From 1985-1990 it was direct feed and bulk CO2 tanks which dominated the fields. The game still had a warlike image but was becoming more and more oriented towards a sport. At this point, tournament games were actually being organized and played.

During the early 90's Paintball was blessed with the introduction of semi automatic markers. Among the first were Tippman's, Autocockers and Automags. It was only at this point when people began to look at Paintball as a sport and not like a Wargame. It was during this time when the age of the pump faded and the reign of the semi took hold.

Paintball became extremely profitable by the late 90's. At this point, companies were beginning to make massive sales on markers and Paintball was said to be "the largest outdoor recreational event in the world". The tournament aspect became even more popular and has since taken hold on the image of Paintball. Only after seeing the Electro whacky guns that we see on the field today can we truly appreciate how our sport has evolved over the past 20 years.
I was recently reading the latest edition of Paintball Magazine when I came across a brilliant article by: Scott "Grizzly" Kurtz which shows an interesting point of view on the sport of paintball. Check it out!
