Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under!

Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under! was the Joker’s first appearance in the third season. Although this was the first meeting of Batgirl and the Clown Prince of Crime, there certainly wasn’t much of a confrontation between them. In this story, Batman and Robin, but not Batgirl, were put into a deathtrap. In fact, Batgirl didn’t have much to do in this episode, although we did see more of Barbara Gordon than usual (in more ways than one! ;>)

I have obtained the final draft of the script by Charles Hoffman, dated September 29, 1967. The balance of this Omake will point out several differences between this script and the episode as broadcast. Finally, I’ll point out a surprising bit of trivia.

The first item to notice is the script names two additional Joker henchmen, Soup and Kelp. They were probably cut for budgetary reasons, to be replaced by two nameless goons in the concluding Batfight. Wipeout is not given a closing credit and it sounds to me as if his lines were dubbed. Joel Eisner’s The Official Batman Batbook, however, lists Ron Burke as the actor playing the part. Johnny Green and the Green Men do not appear in the script, but provide a couple of musical interludes during the TV broadcast.

The first page of the script makes clear something I never noticed, but the more observant of you may have:

ANGLE ON BARBARA

in fetching swimwear, sitting in the shade of her surfboard up-ended in the sand. (emphasis added)

Our favorite librarian surfs! (or at least owns a board!)

Sivi Aberg, who played Mimi in the second season Chandell story, returns to Batman. Later in the teaser, Skip Parker, in answer to Barbara’s question (“Who was that?”) says, “Some chick who’s been hanging around the beach. I think her name’s Undine.” On TV Skip continues to say to Babs, “See you later,” but in the script Barbara has the next line.

BARBARA
(speculates)
Undine. Sea nymph.
(wry)
Well, it fits her.

SKIP
(grins)
Like a bikini.

Dick and Bruce lost some dialogue in the Wayne Manor study, after Bruce gets off the Red Phone with Commissioner Gordon.

DICK
The Hang Five? Gotham Point?
It’s a good thing my surfboard’s
waxed and polished.

BRUCE
(advises)
Before you’re wiped out, let’s
be sure the Joker’s washed up.

Buzzy and Duke (Commissioner Gordon and Chief O’Hara) have different dialogue since the script didn’t envision green-haired musicians on the beach.

CHIEF O’HARA
(unhappily)
We may be incognito, Commissioner.
But I think some sand fleas
recognized me.

COMMISSIONER GORDON
As long as it’s only sand fleas,
Duke.

After the Commissioner explains about surfers’ names, the differences continue.

COMMISSIONER GORDON
(gestures o.s.)
There’s the Hang Five.
(indicates sand)
Ditch your pig in the snow, Duke.

CHIEF O’HARA
(puzzled)
My pig in the snow?

COMMISSIONER GORDON
(measured sotto)
Up-end your surfboard in the sand,
Chief O’Hara.

CHIEF O’HARA
What about you? You haven’t even
got a pig!

COMMISSIONER GORDON
You’re the strong, virile, athletic
type, Duke. I’ll handle the beach,
you handle the breakers.

When they unknowingly hear the sound of Hot Dog Harrigan in the trash can . . .

COMMISSIONER GORDON
More sand fleas?

After entering the Hang Five, the script has O’Hara and Gordon have some lines with and about Undine.

UNDINE
We’re down to lemon fruices, boys.

COMMISSIONER GORDON
Okay, honey. Two lemon fruices.
(sotto to Chief O’Hara)
Lemonade.
(then, to Undine)
Where’s Hot Dog today?

UNDINE
He had to see a man about a - - ding.
(extends paper cups)
Here you are. On the house.

ANGLE FAVORS Commissioner Gordon and Chief O’Hara, taking the cups and moving away from the counter.

CHIEF O’HARA
Free fruices? Looks like she’s
till tappin’.

When Batman and Robin enter, the GIRL calls them “gremlins” in the script, not “gremmies” as she does on TV.

A few points about the scene in the Batcave. First, in the script Batman refers to “bare” feet, but in the broadcast episode Adam West seems to delight in saying, “naked feet.”

Next, as shown, this is the last time we see Alfred in the story. As you will see, that is definitely not the case in the script. Maybe it was decided to keep Alfred and the Joker apart for awhile; maybe Alan Napier was unavailable for some reason; or maybe it was decided for budgetary or other reasons to forgo Alfred in the rest of this episode.

Anyway, after the Batmobile roars out of the Batcave, the script has Alfred declare, for a second time:

ALFRED
Duke and Buzzy?!

STRAIGHT CUT TO:

NARRATOR
AS, BACK IN THE TEN TOES
SURFBOARD SHOP . . .

Here, we find Joker - - charged with energy and surfing knowledge - - sitting on edge of the table where first three stooges are finished unstrapping a very listless Skip, and Kelp is packing up the Surfing-Experience-and-Ability Transferometer.

JOKER
(ticks off
surfing terms
knowingly)
Bottom out, hot curl, over
the falls, shooting the tunnel,
switchfoot, zero break . . . !
(pleased)
Did I leave out anything?

RIPTIDE
Name the famous surfing
beaches again, Joker.

WIPEOUT
They’re so purty.

JOKER
(leaps off table)
Avalanche, Makaha, Picnic Tables,
Banzai Pipeline . . .

. . . and the broadcast episode picks up from there.

Batman lost a couple of lines just before the commercial, after Robin comments on the deathtrap with, “Holy human surfboards!”

BATMAN
Save your breath, Robin. Just
save your breath.

In the script, after the Dynamic Duo free Skip Parker, Batman, instead of Skip, somehow identifies the “Surfing-Experience-and-Ability-Transferometer. Plus his Vigor Reverser."

SKIP
That’s what he called them.

BATMAN
(to Robin)
Warden Chrichton (sic) told me the
Joker was working on something
of the sort, while in durance
vile. The warden thought it
was harmless.

Robin then talks about refilling Skip at Gotham Point. Skip, instead of volunteering to find Barbara Gordon on his own, says:

SKIP
No. I better find Barbara Gordon,
wherever she is, and explain my
fade out.

BATMAN
She’s probably at the library.
I’ll drop you off.
(indicates)
The Batmobile’s in the rear
alley. I’ll be right out

Batman’s next lines are close to what was broadcast, but with subtle differences. Then things really diverge.

BATMAN
Hop a cab or the subway, Robin.
Pick up Alfred and head for
Gotham Point in Dick Grayson’s
car.
(as Robin looks
puzzled)
Batman, in this showdown with the
Joker, may need the help of
millionaire Bruce Wayne’s young
ward . . .

ROBIN
Gotcha, Batman! Alfred and
Dick Grayson will try to be
real helpful hodads!

BAT SPIN TO:

INT. LIBRARY - DAY

ANGLE WITH Barbara and Skip, at librarians’ counter. Skip is still dressed as a surfer.

BARBARA
It must have been a terrible
experience, Skip, and of course
I understand. But you better
get back to Gotham Point and
see if you can help Batman.

SKIP
How? I’ve even forgotten how
to swim!

BARBARA
(smiles)
I’ll meet you at the beach, and
give you some beginner’s lessons.
But I have to drop by my apartment
on the way.

SKIP
I’ll come with you.

BARBARA
(negative)
I’ll have to dream up a story to
get out of here early. And if it
includes a surfer in baggies, I
may be looking for another job.
Get going, Skip. Before we’re
both thrown out.

He EXITS reluctantly, CAMERA ANGLING TO BRING IN SARAH, an older librarian.

BARBARA
Sarah, I have a splitting headache
and if you don’t mind . . .

SARAH
(looks after Skip)
I don’t mind, Barbara. Your
splitting headache’s a very
attractive young man.

BAT SPIN TO:

INT. SECRET BATGIRL ROOM - DAY

NARRATOR
SO, VERY SHORTLY, BARBARA GORDON
MAKES HER AMAZING CHANGE INTO
BATGIRL . . .

BENEATH this, we find Barbara just completing this change.

NARRATOR
. . . IN THE SECRET BATGIRL ROOM
OF HER APARTMENT . . .

She activates WALL IRIS, which opens as:
NARRATOR
. . . THEN LEAPS ON HER BATGIRL
CYCLE . . .

She does so, as IRIS CLOSES.

STRAIGHT CUT TO:

EXT. BATGIRL’S ALLEY ENTRANCE THROUGH BRICK WALL - DAY (STOCK)

NARRATOR
. . . AND A SPLIT SECOND LATER IS
HEADED FOR GOTHAM POINT!

As Batgirl ZOOMS OUT - -

STRAIGHT CUT TO:

EXT. BATMOBILE IN TRANSIT - DAY (STOCK) with Batman alone at wheel.

NARRATOR
ALONG WITH BATMAN IN THE BATMOBILE!

STRAIGHT CUT TO:

EXT. DICK AND ALFRED IN DICK’S TOP-DOWN CAR - DAY (PROCESS)

NARRATOR
AND TWO HELPFUL HODADS IN
DICK GRAYSON’S CAR!

Dick’s surfboard is up-ended in back of convertible, and Dick is in surfing clothes with Alfred in more modified beach attire.

ALFRED
You’re quite an expert behind
the wheel, Master Dick.

DICK
Thanks to my Driver’s Training
Course at school, Alfred.

Alfred leans back, breathes in the fresh air expansively.

ALFRED
Ah! A trip to the seashore!
It brings back fond memories
of Narrabeen and Collaroy!

DICK
Narrabean and Collaroy? Who
are they?

ALFRED
Beaches, Master Dick. In the
land down under. Which, as a
Yeoman in the Royal Navy, I
sometimes body-surfed in my
youth. Oh, the stories I could
tell . . . !

STRAIGHT CUT TO:

INT. THE HANG FIVE SURFERS’ HANGOUT - DAY

NARRATOR
BUT ALFRED ISN’T THE ONLY ONE WHO
HAS FOND MEMORIES TODAY. OR STORIES
TO TELL . . .

Here, we now find the Joker stage center - - surrounded by the crowd of young surfers seen earlier, plus Commissioner Gordon and Chief O’Hara (as Duke and Buzzy) - - extolling his amazing feats, transferred from Skip. Joker proudly holds an up-right surfboard, and Undine is nearby listening rapturously.

JOKER
The killer waves at Deadman’s Point
are the most thrilling in the world!
A race to glory high on the shoulder
there, is a feat few mortals have
accomplished!
(adds)
Including me!

ANGLE ON COMMISSIONER GORDON AND CHIEF O’HARA

CHIEF O’HARA
(impressed)
Begorra.

COMMISSIONER GORDON
What kind of surfing slang is that,
Duke?

RESUME - JOKER, UNDINE AND GROUP

UNDINE
Tell us about riding the nose at
Barracuda Bay, Joker!

JOKER
Gladly, my dear!

The Joker’s tale about Barracuda Bay appear in the episode, but not an onlooker’s observation.

FIRST SURFER
Fifty feet? This guy’s too
good for me!

After Batman, Dick Grayson and – in the script – Alfred show up, our heroes have this exchange:

BATMAN
May I borrow your surfboard,
Dick?

DICK
(extends it)
Of course, Batman!

ALFRED
It always makes surfing that
much easier, sir. Good luck!

The script indicates a shot of Batgirl entering the WOMAN’S LOCKER ROOM, BEACH ENTRANCE. As in the broadcast, Barbara emerges to find Skip.

Then Batman has a speech just before the dialogue heard on TV:

BATMAN
I’m not quite sure what you’re up
to Joker - - but watch out for
sharks, deadly mollusks, electric
eels, hungry squid and Portuguese
men-of-war. And try to avoid sharp
coral and stinging seaweed.

The comments and the ending of the surfing contest are a bit different, too.

BARBARA
(suddenly worried)
Joker’s starting an island
pull-out.

DICK
And Batman’s trying a nose pull-
out!

SKIP
It’s the wrong style for a wave
like that.

DICK
(surprised)
Are you starting to remember?

SKIP
Remember what?

DICK
Your surfing technique! I thought
it was all transferred to the
Joker!

SKIP
(very curious)
Who told you that?

DICK
I know Robin, the Boy Wonder.
He’ll be here later.

SKIP
(beat)
Yes, I guess I - - am starting
to remember.

Then, as the Joker pulls ahead . . .

RIPTIDE
Let’s put this to music!

The script had Riptide and the stooges produce musical instruments “and go into appropriate jivey number.”

JOKER
(elated)
Cowabunga!

ANGLE ON BATMAN ON SURFBOARD - DAY (PROCESS)

Even caped and cowled, and on his surfboard, it is obvious this annoys him.

SKIP
(to Dick)
I am remembering! Cowabunga’s
a term of surfing triumph!
And that - - that Joker didn’t
get any bragging or exultation
out of me!

DICK
(toward surfing
action)
Looks like Batman knows that.

EXT. BATMAN ON SURFBOARD - DAY (PROCESS)

giving everything he has to winning the contest.

ANGLE WITH COMMISSIONER GORDON AND CHIEF O’HARA ON BEACH

where Chief O’Hara now gapes toward surf as Commissioner Gordon’s attention has been attracted to the trash can.

CHIEF O’HARA
It’s neck and neck, Buzzy!

COMMISSIONER GORDON
(ignores this)
Something is pounding in this
trash can!

ANOTHER ANGLE ON BEACH - UNDINE AND (MUSICAL) STOOGES

Suddenly their musical number terminates, as:

UNDINE
(looking surfward)
What’s happened?!

EXT. BATMAN ON SURFBOARD - DAY (PROCESS)

Completely under control now, he glides beachward on a diminishing wave.

EXT. JOKER ON SURFBOARD - DAY (PROCESS)

His exhultation (sic) gives way to concern as he hits the slow water and starts wobbling on his board.

RESUME - FULL ACTION ON BEACH

FAVORING Dick and Skip, Skip turning to Undine and stooges angrily.

SKIP
You know what’s happened! Your
green-haired friend is getting
wiped out by overconfidence, not
by any wave! And it wasn’t my
overconfidence!

ANGLE TOWARDS SURF’S EDGE

PICKING UP Batman and Joker, their ride over, carrying their surfboards as they start up the beach.

BATMAN
You weren’t bad, Joker. Con-
sidering you weren’t even on
that surfboard.

JOKER
(very annoyed)
Who was?

BATMAN
Skip Parker! Or his perfidious
proxy! And to win a surfing
championship, or anything else
worthwhile, it can’t be done by
shabby tricks!

Then Hot Dog is found and the episode proceeds as broadcast. So, the whole bit about Batman avoiding the shark and the tally of the judges does not appear in the final draft.

Instead of “Cowabunga! Begorra,” ending this version, here is how the script to Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under! concludes:

SKIP
(also looks around)
What happened to Batman and Robin?

ANGLE AT DOOR TO MEN’S LOCKER ROOM

from which Bruce and Dick ENTER

BRUCE
They left through the men’s
locker room just as we were
coming in to congratulate the
winner. Avoiding the spotlight,
as usual.
(he, too, looks
around)
But where’s Alfred, Dick?

DICK
Well, he borrowed my surfboard . . .

EXT. ALFRED ON A SURFBOARD - DAY (PROCESS)

beginning an exhilerating (sic) ride down a wave in a most professional manner.

NARRATOR
(concludes for Dick)
. . . AND THE SURF’S UP AGAIN AT
GOTHAM POINT!

FADE OUT
