A Rare Find

Many of the Special Guest Villains and Villainesses on Batman were created specifically for the TV show. There is, however, some controversy as to a few of them whether they were original or based on characters who had appeared in the comic books.

It is generally accepted Mr. Freeze was based on the comic book villain, Mr. Zero. At right is the cover of a Batman 80 page Giant comic book dated December, 1965, featuring Mr. Zero on the lower left quarter of the cover. The next time the character appeared in the comics, he adopted his "TV" name.

Also note The Joker's Utility Belt is in this issue. (The image will enlarge if you click on it.)

Zelda the Great was clearly based on a male magician named Carnado who appeared in Detective Comics #346, also dated December, 1965. Like Zelda, this magician teamed up with Eivol Ekdal, inventor of the "Inescapable Doom-Trap."

Some argue the Batman TV incarnations of Clock King - originally a Green Arrow villain - and the Puzzler - who plagues Superman - were so different from their comic book namesakes so as to be classified as creations of the 1960's television show. I'll grant that's a matter of opinion.

I see less merit in the claim False Face was not based on his comic book persona. In fact, the Table of Contents of the Jan.-Feb., 1968, Batman 80 page Giant says about The Menace of False Face:

"You've seen him battle Batman on TV! Now read the story of the first clash between False Face and the Cowled Crusader . . . from BATMAN No. 113 (February, 1958)!"

There is a school of thought Egghead was based on Barney Barrows, The Mental Giant of Gotham City, who appeared in Detective # 217 in March of 1955:

"Egghead (An Egg Grows In Gotham/The Yegg Foes In Gotham) differed from issue 217's brainy Barney Barrows, though this story was likely the springboard for the character and provided the idea of a victim strapped into a question-and-answer machine used in the TV script."

Phillip Cobb first appeared as a Batman opponent in the comics as the Signalman. His later guise as the Blue Bowman may have served as some inspiration for the Archer. The heroic Green Arrow and a 1941 Superman comic book villain Archer come to mind as well.

Therefore, I submit the following as the list of villains and villainesses created specifically for the 1966-68 Batman television series. I've included a sentence or two about the character's origin in the continuity.

A couple of subsequent comic book villains appear to at least be inspired by TV counterparts. 1981's Detective
# 508 introduced Dr. Gregory Griffin, curator of the Gotham Metropolitan Museum. He believed himself to be the reincarnation of Pharaoh Khafre (sound familiar?) A similar theme was used for the villain Maxie Zeus.

BTW, that's Selina Kyle - yes, Catwoman! - Batman is carrying.

In 1991, the murderous Queen of Hearts from Batman # 472 bore at least some resemblance to Marsha, Queen of Diamonds. Batman: The Animated Series's Roxy Rocket reminds me of the Batman TV Puzzler's moll, Rocket O'Rourke.

Other than that (except for fan-fiction! ;>), the rest of the original TV villains never appeared in another media . . .

. . . at least, that's what I thought, until I found the following coloring book! See if you can guess who the antagonist is before his/her identity is revealed on the second page to follow . . .

On to the story
