The Earth has three layers, the crust, mantle, and core.

The outermost layer of the earth is the crust. The crust is the smallest and thickest layer in the earth. It is also the layer beneath the continents and the oceans. It is about 25 miles thick beneath the continents. It is 6.5 miles thick beneath the oceans. It is light and brittle, and it is small. There are two types of crusts. They are the oceanic and the continental crusts.

The next layer is the mantle. The mantle is so flexible, that it flows. It is also just below the crust. There are two types of mantles. They are the upper and the lower mantles. It is 25 miles thick under the continents. It is 4 miles thick under the oceans. There are two types of crusts, the oceanic and the continental crusts.

The innermost layer is the core. The core can generate their own magnetic fields. This is the inner place of the earth. There are two types of cores, too. They are the inner and the outer cores. The inner core spins as the earth rotates, which creates Earth's magnetic field. Together, they are 2,200 miles(3,520 km) thick.

There are several plates that make up the earth's surface. They are called plate techtonics. These plates move around very slowly. This makes the earth's surface change. This may take millions of years. The plates may shift, spread apart, go underneath each other, slide by each other, and collide into each other.

Pangea

It began as a huge continent, but it broke into pieces of the seven continents. There is a super continent where the continents were once apart of. It is called Pangea.  It led many changes to the shape of the land. It is also a type of mass that's huge. The presence of Pangea helped to initiate extreme environment, and along with other evidence, such as volcanism and impact. They are led to the biggest extinction seen.

Pangea was around millions of years ago. It began breaking up in the Mesozoic era.

This is what it looked like.

Rectangular Callout: Pangea? I thought it was called a continent!
