My LIVE Oscar night coverage

My Oscar predictions (with regrets for so few nods for Almost Famous and no nods for Nurse Betty, High Fidelity or Chicken Run)

Hi, and welcome to my film review site. I'm Henry Hanks, a (maybe) future film critic and webmaster of the Hi-keeba! "supersite." Lately I am following the leads of Matt Williams and Mike D'Angelo and writing capsule reviews to catch up.

Latest reviews

The Emperor's New Groove - A-

- Well-written, well-acted, absolutely hilarious new Disney animated feature. Better than any of the other hand-drawn releases from the past five years. And of course it's getting under-advertised.

Dude Where's My Car? - C-

I could practically feel my IQ lowering. A friend was in it so it was nice to see him. That and Andy Dick were the only real reasons to see.

Traffic - A

Soderbergh continues to amaze. A real travesty that Catherine Zeta Jones' best role went unrecognized by the Academy. I have been converted into the legion of Benicio Del Toro fans (if only I could get back that 90 minutes that Excess Baggage stole from my life). You can't go wrong with Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman either. Michael Douglas is on quite the roll. A powerful, powerful film that I hope will stand the test of time.

Chocolat - B-

A decent fairy tale and every bit as derivative. Johnny Depp is as good as always but he is relegated to a "chick flick" reverse-gender role where he just stands there and looks pretty. Binoche is good, Dench is GREAT (big surprise there). Must we sit through another movie with strong females that includes abusive husbands? And another movie that attacks organized religion? Nothing surprising or very creative here... and aside from the two previously mentioned actresses, nothing Oscar-worthy.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - A

Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat - where are their Oscar nods? An utterly fantastic film in nearly every way. Magnificent. Too bad I'm not quoted in ads.

Quills - B

Oscar-worthy performance by Geoffrey Rush for sure. Falls apart towards the end... well-done for what it is but far from a film I will "treasure," let's just put it that way.

New on video

Meet the Parents - B

- Better than most films of this genre but it still goes for the cheap laugh on many occasions. Great performances by DeNiro and Stiller.

The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle - B-

- Extremely corny, but that's what R&B were. Plenty of plot problems but they are commented on at length. Good for a light matinee.

Almost Famous - A

- Despite a couple of problems late in the film, this is an immensely charming film that will probably stay with me for quite a while and makes up for the flaws. Wonderful performances and soundtrack.

Nurse Betty - A

- Oscar-worthy script and Oscar-worthy performances from Zellweger, Kinnear and especially Freeman. LaBute is turning out to be one a heck of a fine director.

Princess Mononoke - **** or A

Remember the Titans - C+

- I was right when I interned on this movie, it is as mediocre as they come. Terribly predictable script but great acting overall.

The Original Kings of Comedy - B+

- Spike Lee could direct this movie in his sleep. Anyone who has heard about Bamboozled knows this guy has long since "jumped the shark" but Harvey, Hughley, Cedric and Mac are four of the funniest men around.

Wonder Boys - A-

Dinosaur - C+

- Old tired plot, probably the most boring computer animated feature ever.

Bring it On - B-

- Better than I expected on many occasions (I am an unabashed fan of Dunst and Dushku) but exactly what I expected on other occasions.

Coming soon to video

The Road to El Dorado - B

Return to Me - B-

American Psycho - B+
