History

Télé-Québec has grown to be somewhat unconventional compared to other provincial educational systems. For one thing, they now carry commercials, although they try to limit them to the very beginning and end of programs. But even in their non-commercial days, Radio-Québec was different. They wouldn’t go on the air until 6 PM, and for most of 1978, they were off the air completely due to an employee lockout. In spite of all this, the network was the home of arguably the most popular educational kids show of all time, Passe-Partout (shared rights with Radio-Canada), a show which was often thought of as the Quebec equivalent to Sesame Street.

Télé-Québec first went on the air on January 19, 1975 under the name of Radio-Québec. They changed their name to Télé-Québec on September 12, 1996.

Call letters

All of Télé-Québec’s stations, except for CFBJ in Radisson have the same first three call letters "CIV," similar to how all CBC and SRC O&O callsigns begin with the letters CB. But unlike with the CBC, "CIV" is not reserved exclusively for Télé-Québec. For example, the CTV and A Channel stations in Vancouver/Victoria are CIVT & CIVI.

Station IDs

Télé-Québec is really a network of repeater stations, since there is no local programming on any of its affiliates. As a result, CIVM never really had a local ID. However, Radio-Québec once had the unusual practice listing all of its local stations by city and channel number right before its programs. Needless to say, the result was a station ID that was about as long as the average commercial.

CIVM & TQc logos & jingles belong to Télé-Québec. This page not affiliated with Télé-Québec.
