A TV Hat reader informs us that WCWF TV-40 has signed on the air in Saranac Lake. The info I have states that WCWF is to be managed in an LMA with WWBI TV-27. The new station has signed on just as WFFF has stopped carrying CW network programming. This could seem to suggest that the rumours about WCWF being a new CW station were true. Fox 44 no longer carries CW network programming as of September 29th, 2007.
So far, WCWF has been merely broadcasting a repeater signal of WWBI since September 22nd.
Fox 44's parent corporation, Smith Media, LLC, has sort-of purchased WVNY (ABC 22) in 2005. Smith Media has fully integrated the two stations and staff at WFFF.
Since it's not actually legal, under the FCC, for two of the four stations in Burlington to be controlled by the same owner. ABC 22 has actually been sold to a company called Lambert Broadcasting of Burlington, controlled by Michael Lambert of Beverly Hills. However Lambert is entering a joint sales agreement with Smith Media, WFFF-TV's parent corporation. In other words Lambert owns the station on paper while Smith Media will have most of the control in reality. I can't help but wonder if the CRTC would let somebody get away with that in Canada.
Although a Fox station, Fox 44 has also been a secondary CW affiliate. They carried just about everything that was seen on the full CW network, even the stuff that has been turned down (or put on hiatus) by local Canadian broadcasters. Fox 44 generally carried the CW’s prime time shows from 10 p.m. to midnight on weeknights and Sundays, the time-slot formerly known as "The WB time."

Fox 44/WB promo for Everwood (2002/2003 season)WFFF likes to make use of WB network promos with the Fox 44 name & logo added. Fox 44/WB 2000 jingleWFFF has borrowed the WB network jingles, such as this one, to promote their "WB Hour." This is a short sample of "Oh What A Night" by Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons and Vitamin C, based on the 1976 hit song "December 1963" also by Valli (minus Vitamin C). The WB version speaks of 1993 instead, which happens to be about when the arrival of the WB network was announced. Coincidence? The song is not available for sale as it was made especially for the network. Other recent slogans used include “Watch the Frog” (also used on the WB). When Fox 44 first went on the air in 1997, the song Change by Sheryl Crow was used in a promo to announce the arrival of the new station. |

Above: Fox 44 station IDs from 2003. The one on the right is similar to what is used in promos, although this one is actually from the closing of The WB Time where an announcer thanks viewers for watching and promotes the upcoming line-up. A similar introduction aired at the beginning with a welcome message. Interestingly, these openings and closings also acted as official station IDs. Note the "WFFF Burlington Plattsburgh Montreal" at the bottom of the screen.
