Money in Turkey

The currency of Turkey is the Turkish lira. Current, Turkey is in an economic crisis and results change daily.

At the time of writing, the British pound was worth just over 2'000'000 TL (Turish lira), the dollar was a little over 1'500'000 TL. (18th July 2001)

Prices in Turkey vary considerable, from shop to shop and from region to region.

These are some example prices, based on Istanbul (cos I live there) in July of 2001. They can change rapidly so don't sue me.

Glass of local beer in cheap bar: 1'250'000 TL
Cheap snack (doner sandwich for example): 2'000'000 TL
Reasonable meal in local lokanta include a soft drink: 4-5'000'000 TL
Evening meal including wine in nice restaurant: 12-15'000'000 TL
Packet of cigarettes: 1'500'000 TL
Small bottle of water: 300'000 TL
15 minute taxi ride: 3'500'000TL
Cheap hotel (pppn): 10$ (hostels are cheaper, around 5$)
Train ticket: 550'000 TL
Dolmus ride: 250'000'000 - 600'000
Minibus trip (eg, Bakirkoy - Taksim, 30 mins): 750'000 TL
Ferry to Princes Islands: 1'500'000 TL
Fast Ferry to Kadikoy: 2'500'000 TL
Museum entrance fee: 2'000'00-5'000'000 TL

I expect these to rise dramatically in the next few days because inflation is runing high at the moment. Also, the tourist areas can be slightly more expensive.

Be a little cautious where you change your money. The exchange offices (Dovis) on Divan Yolu, the main street in Sultanahmet can give unfriendly rates. Banks are usually fairly good although there is often a queue. The banks in the airport do not seem to vary considerably from the true rate as you may be led to believe. There are many ATM machines around Istanbul and other major cities.
