Houston, Texas ¾ Texas Southern defeated Lane College, 31-6, in a morning contest that drew about 2500 fans to Delmar Stadium on Saturday.

Goldy Jackson caught five passes from Adam Lamb for 90 yards and one touchdown. Lamb, who went 19 of 30 for 216 yards with a touchdown and an interception, hit Jackson with a 42-yard pass early in the third quarter.

First half action saw the Dragons hitting Lamb from all sides as he was sacked once and hurried often. The Tigers managed to score twice, midway through the first quarter, on a 33-yard field goal by All-American kicker, J.B. LaCombe, and Waymon Steed's five-yard run.

"We struggled in the first half. Most of the protection and sack problems came because the quarterback didn't get us in the right protection," TSU offensive coordinator Charlie Coiner said. "When people play us like Lane did, in other words, they're going to blitz and bring six or seven people- we're going to throw the long ball. People will understand that if they're going to do that, we're going to go deep," he added.

Lamb went deep to Jackson a 4:52 in the third quarter, with a 37-yard touchdown pass. When the Dragon defense backed off, the backfield got the call and Steed answered-again-with his second touchdown, from one yard out. Ray Rubins scored the final touchdown for TSU in the fourth quarter with his two-yard run at 12:10 to put the Tigers ahead, 31-0.

It took the Lane defense to finally score one for the Dragons. Earl Moore, who led the Dragons with ten tackles, took a 12-yard interception into the end zone. A failed two-point conversion made the score 31-6.

Lane, (1-2, 0-1) traveling with three of their four quarterbacks, had to start their fourth-string quarterback due to unspecified team violations.

The Dragons netted only four yards rushing, as Lernard Mack led the Tigers with eight tackles, four for a loss of six yards. Lonnie Phillips followed with six tackles and one sack for a loss of four yards, and Sam Harris added five tackles, two for a loss of eleven yards, and one sack for a ten-yard loss.

Tiger head coach Bill Thomas told his team, after the game, "We came out in the first half and made mental errors that we didn't make in the second half because we decided to get ourselves ready to play."

"The teams we're going to play from this point on, we won. t have the luxury of taking a half off," he added.

The Tigers, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play, will be idle next week, September 23, That should allow injuries to key players, Yves Eveillard (DB, bruised shoulder), Lonnie Phillips (LB, contusion), and Cedric Wiley (OG, hand fracture) time to heal.

TSU will be back in action September 30, when they host the Langston University Lions at 7 p.m. in Rice University Stadium.
