TSU Loses to Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES -- Steven Adams drilled an inside-the-park home run and Jordan Robison added a grand slam in a 13-run fourth inning Tuesday as Northwestern State ripped Texas Southern 16-3 in a non-conference college baseball game at Brown-Stroud Field.

Northwestern (22-10) also got a solo homer by Mike Hathaway, a two-run triple from Tyler Durham and another RBI by Robison on a fielders choice while sending 16 hitters to the plate in the fourth inning. Texas Southern (18-18) used three pitchers in the inning and hastened its own demise with four errors.

Robison’s home run was his 10th of the year and part of a 13-hit onslaught by the Demons in the game, which was shortened to six innings by the mercy rule. NSU left 11 more runners on base.

Northwestern, tuning up for a key Southland Conference series against McNeese at home beginning Saturday at noon, got eight strikeouts from starting pitcher Gary Adair (2-1), who scattered five hits in six innings.

The Tigers were leading 2-1 before the Demons exploded in the fourth inning. Jason Roy cracked a second-inning solo home run, his eighth of the year, and David Bell added an RBI single in the third to overcome a first-inning NSU run that scored on a wild pitch.

The Northwestern outburst began quietly with a leadoff walk to Hathaway and a bunt single by David Quattrociocchi. A pair of errors allowed Hathaway to score and Quattrociocchi scored on a bunt single by Jeramie Hale. Durham tripled in two runs down the left field line and the Demons picked up two more runs on Robison’s groundout and an other error before Adams had his inside-the-park homer to centerfield to make it 10-2.

That chased Tiger starter Clint Young and brought in Kier McDonald, who surrendered a leadoff homer to Hathaway, a single to Quattrociocchi and a pair of walks before Robison ripped his round-tripper with the bases full for a 14-2 advantage, bringing on TSU reliever Nick Bortnachek. NSU put runners on the corners before he was able to end the inning.

Adams added a RBI single in the sixth before Lee McLeon used a sacrifice fly to score the final Demon run.
