Troy's Top Ten Favorite Albums
S.O.D. is a side project of the band "Anthrax", and when they released their debut album, "Speak English or Die", the metal community went absolutely nuts. This 21 track, 30 minute album features a collection of songs that your average metal band would never record, at least for album sales anyway. Well, S.O.D. proved that theory wrong, because even today, this is one of the most popular albums for any metalhead to get their hands on.
Oh boy . . .where do I start with "Mucky Pup"? Well, first of all, if you've never heard of the band (and most people haven't), then you have to take my word for it and pick up a copy of "A Boy in a Man's World". This has got to be one of most interesting albums of all time. The highlight of the album is the track titled "You Stink", which was submitted for a contest held by the creators of the "Bloom County" comic strip. Well . . . Mucky Pup won!
OK, so this is not a "Metal" album, but it's still Rock 'n Roll (and I like it)! Hey, that's a "Rolling Stones" song! COOL! Anyway, "Pink Floyd: The Wall" was one of the very first records I ever owned when I was kid and I still LOVE it today! For some strange reason I really enjoy "Concept Albums" (and you'll notice this when you go down the list). There's nothing like hearing a really good story being told through music.
Not a very popular album or even band at that matter, actually, most "Metalheads" have probably never even heard of "Dirty Looks", but in reality, they were part of the LA Metal scene in the mid '80's! Unfortunatly, they didn't get enough exposure, so they never had a chance to make a real name for themselves, but this album, "Cool From The Wire" has got to be one of the best "80's Hair Metal Albums" of all time. Trust me!
This album is absolutely fantastic! Kind of a "Concept Album", but not really, most of the songs were written about major events that happened in "World History". The highlight of the album is a 32 minute epic called, "Gettysburg (1863)" which was written about the Civil War in Gettysburg from July 1st thru July 3rd, 1863. "The Glorious Burden" was written by guitar great Jon Shaffer and fronted by ex-Judas Priest vocalist,Tim "Ripper" Owens.
I know what you're all thinking, "Oh my God, Judas Priest is not #1 on his list? Holy Crap!" Well, like I said before, this is a "favorite album list", not a favorite band list! So why "Turbo"? Most metalheads did not like this album as it wasn't your typical "Judas Priest" release. But that's the whole point, it doesn't sound like anything else they've done before, it has a sound all on it's own. Every song is perfect and Rob Halford's voice is amazing!
Just like "S.O.D.", "Trans-Siberian Orchestra" (or TSO) is a side project of another Metal Band called "Savatage". You're proably familiar with "TSO" as they also released three other "Christmas" related concept albums. On this "Concept Album" the band concentrated on music by the infamous "Beethoven" and the events of his personel life. Not really a "Metal" album, this is a mixture of Hard Rock and Classical music.
One of the most outragous bands in the world, "W.A.S.P." is the brainchild of "Blackie Lawless", the founder and the frontman of the band. "The Crimson Idol" is yet another "Concept Album" and it's Blackie's story of a young man trying to make it into the music buisness. Along the way, Jonathan (the lead character in the story) gets hooked on Drugs and learns the horrors of the music industry. A very emotonal album, even for Heavy Metal!
Well, here ya go, my favorite album of all time, "Savatage - Streets: A Rock Opera", and of course, it's a "Concept Album"! Just like "The Crimson Idol" by "W.A.S.P.", this is the story of a young man who gets caught up in the crazy world of the music industry. But on this album, the band takes you on their journey though Hard Rock songs, Piano songs, and even ballads. Every song has an emotionl edge and in the end, you may even shed a tear!

Sevendust

Animosity
       2001
By now most of you know that "Sevendust" is one of my favorite bands of all time . . . actually, they're my second favorite band right behind "Judas Priest". So why are they #6 on my list? Well, as much as I love "Sevendust", this a "favorite album list", not a favorite band list! Yes, there are some albums out there that I do like better, but make no mistake, "Animosity" is fantastic album from start to finish.
