Cannon will host a Boy Scout conclave today through Sunday at various locations around the base.

More than 300 Boy Scouts will attend the event.

"A conclave is a gathering of scouts for training, comraderie and brotherhood," Bill Richter, a coordinator for the event and one of Cannon's scout leaders, said.

"The scouts coming to this conclave are from Southern Colorado, New Mexico and West Texas. They have been selected by their peers of the Order of the Arrow," Richter continued.

The Order of the Arrow is made up of honor campers and is a community service orientated-organization within the Boy Scouts.

The conclave events will include training sessions, crafts, competitions, tours of the base and a demonstration by the Kwahadi Dancers. The scouts will also be addressed by Senatorial candidate Bill Redmond.

"The Kwahadi Dancers are a group of Native American Boy Scouts who have preformed their tribal dances all over the world," Richter said.

"Scouting has been around since 1910 and lately we have taken a lot of knocks for not being 'politically correct' because we have stayed within our traditions. The scouts have been teaching life skills and core values to young people for a long time and doing a good job of it in my opinion.

"People keep trying to come up with quick fixes to todays youth problems. They always want to try something new, but scouting has been helping young people get ready to meet lives challenges for ninety years now," Richter added.

"We invite the people of Cannon to come out and take alook at what we do. If they have any questions they can come by the teepees at Unity Park and get them answered," Richter concluded
