  • To properly pack a backpack: Heavy items go towards the top. Put frequently needed items in the side pockets. Load with what you will need first on top. The backpack after loading with gear properly should weigh no more than 1/4 of your weigh. calculate the weight of the water you will be carrying also. One quart of water weights two pounds. One person should always carry at least two quarts if water is avaliable on trail, more if no water is available. Try on loaded pack and wear for one hour. make adjustments to load and pack fit as needed. If pack is unstable or two heavy after one hour, it is packed incorrectly or you have too much. Take only what you need for the duration of the hike. Repackage food and toiletries into smaller units.
