Sat 10th Dec

Beccles Golf Club competitors playing in the 9 hole stableford on Sat 10th had to battle the cold as well as the course. Some lingering frost made two of the greens difficult to putt which didn't help many of the scores. David Wells recorded the best score of 17 points to win the event followed closely by the newly elected Club President Richard Mills on 16 points. Alan Ereira was placed third because of a slightly inferior countback also scoring 16 points. Apologies to Rod Cooper who's name was omitted from last weeks list of monthly medal winners for 2005. The Christmas 9 hole competition on Sat 17th will tee off at 0930 (draw 0915) with onlt 3 clubs and a putter permitted in the bag. Michael Garrood

Sat 24th Dec

The Christmas 9 hole competition at Beccles Golf Club on Sat 24th was well attended getting most members out of last minute shopping with wives. Unfortunate John Cook arrived with only 3 clubs and a putter in his bag wrongly assuming last weeks cancelled event was being replayed, so was at a distinct disadvantage from the start. Needless to say he wasn't amongst the best scorers. The December monthly medal winner Del Collyer maintained his good form by winning the event with a sparkling round scoring 22 points followed by Pat Gill with 20 points and Mike Webb 18 in third place. The event was concluded with Christmas snacks provided and prepared by Club Captain Ray Walding and Shirley. The postponed limited club competition will tee off at 0930 (draw 0915) on Sat 31st with only 3 clubs and a putter allowed in the bag. (John Cook please note!) Michael Garrood

Sat 7th Jan

The first event of 2006 took place at Beccles Golf Club on Sat 7th when the monthly medal was contested. The Club's newly elected Captain Dick Grieve started proceedings with the customary drive off, with a raffle raising money in aid of the Mayor of Beccles appeal, depending on how far he hit it. Estimates ranged from 5 yards to infinity but Dick excelled himself with a very good shot in front of a large audience. The course proved difficult to master in the overcast conditions underlined by quite a few non returns and no competitor able to equal or beat par figures. A countback was required to separate 3 equal scores of 69 with David Wells being declared the winner with Del Collyer second and Matthew Womack third. Refreshments after the event provided by Liz and Ali were appreciated and enjoyed by all. The 18 hole competition on Sat 14th will tee off at 0830 (draw 0815). Michael Garrood

Sat 14th Jan

The 18 hole stableford competition held at Beccles Golf Club on Sat 14th was contested by the largest field for some weeks. Graham Kitching performed a feat during his round never witnessed before. His tee shot struck from the 12th was found sitting on top of the block marking the 18th tee. To place it there by hand and for it to remain there would prove very difficult, but he achieved it from 150 yards away with a golf club much to the amusement of his playing partners. The competition itself saw much better scores than of late, the best being the winning score of 40 points by Club Secretary Alan Ereira. Mike Garrood was second with 39 points having missed a putt of 12 inches on the 18th green. Paul Segust was back to form finishing third with 37 points. At the presentation Club Captain Dick Grieve thanked Liz for the very welcome hot soup and sandwiches. More information about the club can be viewed on the website at www.becclesgolfclub.tk The 18 hole competition on Sat 21st will tee off at 0830 (draw 0815) Michael Garrood

Sat 21st Jan

It is not often in amateur golf that a countback fails to separate equal scores but it happened at Beccles Golf Club on Sat 21st. Norman Blainey and Mike Garrood's score cards were identical in every respect and gave them joint 3rd place in the stableford competition. Willie White with a similar score was placed second because of a better countback. For the second week in succession, Alan Ereira posted the best score to take first place and another handicap cut much to the delight and relief of his fellow members. Thanks were expressed to Trevor Pluck for preparing the greens for the competition and Ali for the refreshments. In recent weeks, the club has welcomed 5 new members and invite anyone without a club to join them. Details available on the website at www.becclesgolfclub.tk. The competition on Sat 28th will tee off at 0830 (draw 0815) Michael Garrood

Sat 28th Jan

The start of the planned 18 hole competition at Beccles Golf Club was delayed by early frost and curtailed to a 9 hole event. Competitors found the chipping and putting a bit of a lottery in the early stages as the ground was still hard. Scores reflected the conditions with nobody burning up the course. The best score was recorded by Paul Cook to win the event with Paul Segust second and Mike Garrood third. Welcome refreshments were provided by Sye and thanks were expressed to Rod Green for his extra early task of preparing the greens for the competition. The monthly medal will be contested on Sat 4th Feb, tee off 0830 (draw 0815)
