Base Village

Peth-shahapur (पेठ शहापूर) and Ambavne (अंबवणे)

There are two ways to go up.

  1. The easiest way is via Peth Shahapur village. The route has steps till the top of the fort. It will take only 1 hour to reach the top. You will see some caves and a Ganesh temple while climbing the steps. For this route get down at Peth-shahapur village and start climbing the fort.

  2. While going up, you can prefer the second way. For that get down at Ambavne (2km ahead to peth-shahapur). Ask in the village for the route. Climb the fort of Korigad. This way is slightly tricky, passing through dense bamboo forests and large rocks with carved steps here and there. It is a bit tough path and also a bit tricky to find. The path is गडाची चोरवाट  and is the shortest path top reach the top. Once you find the arrow you know you are on the right path. Do not ask the employees and security guards of Ambi-valley. They are not natives and they hardly know anything.

  1. Reach Lonavla by Indrayani express. Timings are given below.

  2. Catch bus to Sahara (Ambi-valley) or Ambavne/ Bhamburde. (Bus at 9.15am from Lonavla ST depot)

  3. Get down at Peth-shahapur or Ambavne and start climbing the fort.

  1. Korigad is famous for its excellent fortification (‘तटबंदी’)

  2. There are two lakes and many cannons on the fort. The largest one is ‘lakshmi toaf’. The lakes have thousands of frogs. And some of them are really large. The water is drinkable but better you take your own also.

  3. Korai devi temple – the deity of the fort Korigad (the statue is 4ft in height)

  4. The surrounding forts of Tung, Tikona, Prabalgad, Matheran, Manikgad, Karnala, Lohgad and Visapur can be seen from the top.

  5. The excellent aerial view2 of Sahara amby-valley, which is situated at the other side of the base of the fort. You will love this one.

Reach village Peth-shahpaur by steps. We recommend this one. Catch the bus to Lonavla. Don’t miss the last bus, which is at 5 o’clock. There are no 6-seaters here. You will have to rely on the lift given by truck drivers, which is also very rare in this area.
If you are staying in Mumbai, better catch some ST bus from Lonavla depot direct to your home.
