Courtsy of Vic Villinnois
Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines
September 10, 1999

Greetings.

My name is Travis Skaggs.  Once, and long ago, I was Cpl. Skaggs of Golf Co., 2nd Bn., 7th Marines.  From late February 1969 until mid February 1970 I served with Golf in Vietnam.

On the following pages are 522 pictures, 9 maps, parts of a diary I kept, and various other items pertaining to Golf company's Vietnam experience.  Most of the pictures were lent to me by other Marines.  Most, but not all, of them served with Golf company.

There is a lot of verbage along with these pictures because I want you to know who they were, what was going on, and what became of them.

Though I was with weapons platoon I spent the larger share of my tour attached to Golf's 1st platoon and that is where the bulk of my thoughts lie.  Just below is a list of 1st platoon Marines that were killed while I was with them.  Each of them had friends and family.  Each of them left a hole in the platoon that we covered the best we could by false bravado and other machinations of the the soul that fortunately are so available to the young.  But even the best covered holes will finally leave their mark on the surface.  And so it is with me.

One of the links at the bottom of the page will take you to a more complete list of Golf's KIAs.

It all started here.
The yellow footprints.

The first order we heard** as Marines*** was to get off the bus and stand on these prints.

** Well, actually the first order we had was to shut our g*******d mouths and swallow that f*****g mouths.

*** Acually we weren't Marines yet.  We were maggots.  The DI that got on the bus to issue order No. 1 assured us of this.  We were more than happy to take his word for it.  Where the Marines Corps got this monster is a mystry.
