Hallstatt's tiny town square is surrounded by flower-covered homes and businesses		The Ossuary contains the bones of Hallstatts residents. Cemetery space is so limited that people were only buried for 12 years before they were moved to make room for others

Family members painted the skulls of their loved ones once their "cemetery time" was over. Roses for women, ivy for men, snakes for sinners!

The only way to reach Hallstatt from the train station is by a five minute ferry ride across the lake. The boat meets every train.

I stayed at the Seehotel Gruner Baum, which is the yellow building just to the left of the church

Hallstatt boasts the world's oldest salt mine, which is still in operation today. Tourists don mining clothes and board the little tram to enter

I rode the funicular up the mountainside, took the salt mine tour, then hiked back into town. This is a view from the hiking trail
