Hi there! Welcome to the OLD Ketchikan Trails Coalition page! You will be able to visit us at our new site: www.ketchikantrails.org by Sept. 1 or so, please update your bookmarks!

Our mission:

To assist in the planning, development, promotion, and maintenance of hiking trails and other outdoor opportunities in the Ketchikan area.

History:

The Trails Coalition was formed in 1992 as a coordinating and planning group for outdoor recreation and trail issues.

Our first project was the development of the Ketchikan Trails Plan (1995).

In 1997 we began promoting trail development through the Trails Ketchikan proposal to build eight new trails in the Ketchikan area.

How You Can Help:

You can become a member of KORTC. Membership is $10 a year for individuals, or $20 a year for families.

Save your receipts from Alaskan & Proud and send them to KORTC at 4592 S. Tongass Hwy., Ketchikan, AK 99901.

Adopt-a-Trail:

We unveiled our Adopt-a-Trail program in April 2003. Kathleen Wiechelman and I (Dave) are the coordinators for this. We're looking for groups or families to help maintain Ketchikan-area trails. Almost every Forest Service, state, or borough trail is available for adoption right now. We're asking groups or families to, at the least, pick up litter, trim brush, and maintain drainage. You can adopt a whole trail or just part of a trail. Tools and safety equipment are available for loan from KORTC. If you would like more information, e-mail Kathleen or myself. You can also reach Kathleen by phone at 247-7780 or myself at 225-2603.

Activities:

After taking a year off, we will again be offering many community activities in 2009.

Saturday, June 20 - Ward Creek Trail - Not a big turnout, but Bob, Lisa, Dave, Danny, and Sara had a great hike on a nice morning. The memory card for the digital camera turned out to be somewhere else, so no picture this time. A big "thank you" goes out to Susan from hike co-sponsor Parks & Recreation.

Saturday & Sunday, June 27-28 - Naha/Jordan Lake Cabin - This trip was canceled due to nasty weather.

Saturday, July 25 - Deer Mountain Trail - We had a great turnout and great weather for the 10th annual Deer Mountain hike, co-sponsored by Ketchikan Gateway Borough Parks and Recreation. Rod, Spencer, Eddy, Ivana, Deb, Reese, Maggie, Teresa, and Jared joined Dave on a beautiful Saturday morning.

Saturday, August 22 - Dude Mountain Trail - Join hiking enthusiast Kerry Watson on a hike up Dude Mountain, where the trail leads through berry patches, muskeg, and a ridge blooming with wildflowers, before the top is reached. The trail affords excellent views in all directions. There is a chance of seeing mountain goat, black bear and deer, ptarmigan or grouse in the area. If time allows, there is an option of continuing along an easy ridgeline before returning down the trail. Meet at the Revilla Road intersection with Ward Lake turnoff (at the parking lot for the Salvage Trail) at 8 a.m. We will carpool from there to the trailhead. Contact Kerry at kwatson@gci.net or 225-0406 for more information.
