FOREWORD

Just like any other bilingual dictionary, TOTFinder aims at providing a tool that will enable those engaged in the task of translating any text to find the most suitable equivalent to the words or phrases in question. Emphasis was placed on the Portuguese as it is spoken in Brazil, although a great many entries bear indication to their form in European Portuguese.

"
TOTFinder Traducetur Omnium Translation Finder" is an equivalence finder designed to support the task of translating from Portuguse into English and vice-versa.

This version of TOTFinder includes nearly 110,000 entries and subentries. It also includes idioms, colloquialism, figurative meaning, slangs, and regionalisms. The main purpose of this dictionary is to be useful to anyone as a translation finder, either a professional translator or any person who has the English language as a working tool. It's broadly known that some times no equivalence exists within a given context and that the various influences suffered by the Brazilian Portuguese from native and African languages give rise to additional difficulties, especially in the realms of Cookery, Zoology, Botany, and Religion. Some of these appear to be almost unsurmountable some times. For this reason, TOTFinder will try, whenever possible, to provide, in addition to the direct translation, explanations for the meaning of those hard-to-translate words or phrases.

A dictionary will never be regarded as finished because all living language is continuously evolving and incorporating new words and expressions, especially in science and technology. TOTFinder, therefore, is not and will never be a finished work. This is just the first version of the dictionary and it will be continuously reviewed and updated. For this reason, it may happen that an uninformed reader will be disappointed for not finding in the dictionary the easy-to-find words or phrases he/she is looking up. Because they are common-place and easy-to-find, they may not have been included in the first version of TOTFinder. We hope that in a near future these will also be incorporated.

Many people have contributed in the making of this dictionary. I want to offer them my gratitude with particular thanks to those who believed in and support my work by purchasing it in this experimental and yet-not-finished form.
