'A proposed tunnel under the Straits of Dover to improve railway communication between England and France; first scheme interrupted by Franco-Prussian War (1870); trial tunnels from Sangatte and Dover driven in 1875 proved successful; joint select committee of Lords and Commons (1833) reported the scheme 'inexpedient,' and operations ceased on both sides; the question is again being considered by War Office and Admiralty.'
