What is Transpersonal Psychology?

The term "Transpersonal" means "beyond the personal" and in simple terms Transpersonal Psychology could loosely and tentatively be defined as the area of psychology which integrates aspects of psychology with aspects of spirituality. It's central concept is 'self-transcendence' which is a sense of identity with something beyond the single human condition that is deeper, broader and more unified than the individual self. Transpersonal Psychology also encompasses "non-ordinary" states of awareness (e.g. mystical experiences, psychedelic experiences etc.) and incorporates Western and Eastern approaches to the growth, development and evolution of consciousness.
