Introduction
Welcome to the second learning cycle in the course Introduction to Tourism (Tour 150)! This site is designed to help Year 2 Higher Diploma students with their Inbound Tourism project.
Purpose
This project is designed for students in the first semester of their Travel and Tourism Higher Diploma at the Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates. It has been observed that students with extensive international travel experience and an open-mindedness tend to join the programme. Their english language level tends to be at a higher level than other students in the same year. This may be, in some part, due to their travel experiences. They generally come to the programme with a reading level of band 5 to 5.5 IELTS (International English Language Testing Service).
The project uses a collaborative approach
The project will develop skills and knowledge for both this subject, Introduction to Tourism, and your computing subject this semester, Business Computing II.
Goals and Objectives
The main goal of this project is to introduce you to the most important concept in inbound tourism - identification of the tourist product and its components. By the time you finish the Inbound Tourism module of Introduction to Tourism (Tour 150) you will be able to:
define the concept of a destination's tourist product
explain, with relevant examples, the components of the tourist product (destination mix)
explain the interdependencies between the components of the tourist product
demonstrate effective problem-solving capability
explain the need for understanding tourist market segmentation for promoting a destination
demonstrate how to promote a destination's tourist product using the Internet as the media medium |
Problem-Based Approach
Solving problems is clearly a crucial skill in most jobs and careers. Business leaders emphasise the need for problem solving skills. This project presents a problem in the form of a scenario and the challenge put to you as a tourism professional. It is expected that you will gain a deeper learning of the subject with this approach.
Suggested Instructional Sequence
You are advised to read each topic contained within the Tourist Product, view some suggested websites and participate in the topic quizzes before commencing the project.
You may study the content of the 'Tourist Product' in any order. A next topic hyperlink can be used to follow a suggested pathway.
