Here are a few suggestions to help you look your best!
You should be the focal point in your portraits, not your clothing. Long sleeve solids or very subtle prints are usually the most flattering in portraits. Busy patterns and loud colors can be very distracting and tend to draw attention away from your face. Also remember that large patterns and oversized clothing will add the appearance of extra weight in photographs. Darker clothing minimize body size. Medium to dark colored clothing look best on darker backgrounds, and medium to light colored clothing looks best on lighter backgrounds. Bring at least one outfit of light color and one of a dark color to the studio with you. For outdoor portraits, earth tones look best. Beige, brown, tan, light green etc. Please, do not mix light and dark tones in the same outfit, unless you want to use them for black and white portraits. Also, bring something that is "really you", a special t-shirt, belt, ball cap, boots, etc. to wear in at least one pose.
If you wear glasses, and want them on in your poses, please bring a pair of frames without the lenses in them to avoiid glare, distortion, and darkness.
Props help to show your personality and show the types of activities you enjoy. Please bring some of your own props for your portrait session to customize your portrait. Some ideas are: letter jackets, uniforms, hats, sports equipment, stuffed animals, sunglasses, musical instrument, hunting gear, car, or a pet.
Have your hair cut or trimmed at least a week before your portrait session, so it will look more relaxed and natural.
Men should shave about one hour before their session, to eliminate redness and a 5 o'clock shadow which is hard to remove by retouching. Women should wear evening makeup, applied moderately, to accent the eyes and lips. Use of makeup will blend skin tones for more pleasing portraits. Also bring your makeup with you, incase you need to make any changes to it.
Remember to get a good night's rest, and don't be nervous, your session will be fun!
