Other Chapter Railfan Trips---

Other Chapter Railfan trips in the early days included the following:

---Riding inside a
Santa Fe Motorcar From Atchison to Topeka, Kansas;

---Riding
the last Santa Fe Passenger Train from Atchison to Topeka, Kansas
(All Chapter Members and Santa Fe Officials participated);

---Riding Rock Island's
"Twin-Star" Rocket to Kansas City for the Tri-Chapter
meeting with KC and Wichita, and then coming back from there on
Santa Fe's "Kansas Cityan" or else on Union Pacific's train #639;

---Riding Santa Fe's
"Little Ranger" behind Motorcar M-176 from Emporia to
Winfield, Kansas and back in 1958;

---Riding Rock Island's
"Imperial" from Topeka to Herington, Kansas and
back; And,

---Riding Union Pacific's
"Portland Rose" from Topeka to Salina, Kansas
and back.

Note: These Railfan trips were possible thanks to the use of Railroad Timetables to
the advantage of our Chapter members.

Other Early Chapter Activities (Non-Fantrips)---

When Chapter members were not riding on Passenger Fantrips, they could be found in
town participating in other railfan activities.

Some would go out to West Topeka in the evenings and spend them with Former
Chapter Member Frank "O" Kelley in the
Union Pacific West Topeka Telegraph
office, watching UP trains go by; Others would gather on Sunday afternoon at
the
Union Pacific Roundhouse in North Topeka and at the the Union Pacific
Depot on Saturday mornings; And still, others would hang around the
Santa Fe
roundhouse near Downtown after Foreman "Mccoy" went home for the evening.

As you can see (and have read), there was
no shortage of Chapter activites that our
members could participate in; And, at least in my mind, that's what makes our
NRHS Chapter so special. We should not take this for granted---Instead, let's
embrace our past and make our Chapter's future a bright one!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This History about the Topeka, Kansas Chapter of the National Railway Historical
Society (NRHS) was researched by Webmaster M. Beem with the much appreciated
assistance of well-noted Topeka Railroad Historian William "Art" Gibson, Jr.

Again, the Webmaster wishes to take this time to thank "Art" Gibson, Jr. for his wonderful recollections of the beginning of our Chapter, and of the railroad
history of Topeka. None of this would be possible without you, "Art", so Thanks
a million and keep on railroading, my friend!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks must go out to the members of our NRHS Chapter too. This
Project would not have been possible without the support and the help that
you all have given me so far in making our website outstanding!!!! Thank you!!!!
