Notes on the Final Examination
(July 5, 2001)

The Final Examination consists of 50 multiple choice and true/false questions, each worth one point.  Most of these questions are from material covered during the last quarter of the course, particularly chapters 12-15.  Please review these chapters closely and do the practice quizzes on the textbook website.

There are also five (5) essay questions, each worth 10 points.  Here is a rough outline of what you should know for these questions:

(1)  You should be prepared to discuss the "Era of Good Feeling," and the issues dividing Americans during the Monroe Administration (1817-1825) and beyond.  You should be familiar with economic changes in the U.S. during this period, and be prepared to discuss the transportation revolution as well as early industrialization.

(2)  You should be familiar with the structure of antebellum southern society, and be prepared to discuss the reasons why non-slaveholding whites in the south continued to support slavery.

(3)  You should be familiar with the causes and consequences of the Second Great Awakening, particularly its impact on women.  Be prepared to discuss the various reform movements that sprang out of the Great Awakening, and evaluate the success or failure of each.

(4)  You should be familiar with the doctrine of Manifest Destiny, and the arguments for and against American expansion.  Be prepared to discuss the reasons for American migration westward during the 1840's and beyond.

(5)  You should be familiar with the conditions and events leading up to the Civil War, and be prepared to evaluate the extent to which slavery was the overriding issue in the conflict.

The Exam will be closed book.  You will have the full two-hours to complete all questions.
