The Demonstration Rice Mill Project of Chitralada Farm in the grounds of Chitlada Villa, Dusit Palace, was inaugurated by His Majesty the King on May 8th. B.E. 2514 (A.D. 1971) as a research and study facility rather than that of an on-going business enterprise. The rice which is milled is consumed within the Palace as well as marketed at nominal prices.
His Majesty the King (Bhumibol Adulyadej) is well aware of the fact that rice is an easily perishable commodity; thus the Demonstration Rice Mill Project of Chitralada Farm has been most concerned with the problem of paddy storage, particularly as regards the matters of humidity and temperature differences, in connection with various types of soios used. Cement, iron and wooden silos have been tried out with varying degrees of success.
As the milling of rice at the Demonstration Rice Mill Project genrated a large amount of husks, a Husk Grinding Facility was thus established to mix ground husks with lime and other types of chemicals for use as fertilizers. Ground husks were also compressed into logs for use as fuel in the place of charcoal and wood.
